Garmin's upcoming connected GPS portable navigation device (PND) has been revealed via FCC application. Model number 01102291 or the Nuvi 1690, as it is referred to in the publicly available document, features GSM, GPRS, and EDGE connectivity for data. Voice calls won't be supported by the device's cellular connection, but its included Bluetooth connection and your connected mobile phone will fill that gap.
Specs beyond the new Nuvi's connectivity are limited at this point, as Garmin has not officially announced the 1690. However, with the right feature set, this PND could go head to head with … Read more
Well, I'll be damned. I never thought I'd see this day, but after numerous delays, Garmin-Asus is finally releasing its Nuvifone models, starting with select Asian markets.

"Simple, yet effective" is probably the best way to describe Garmin's entry-level Nuvi 205W GPS device. This unit doesn't pack a lot of bells and whistles and focuses on getting the basics right, delivering a user experience that's easy for your chronically lost grandma to use.
The standout feature in this new model is a new "Where am I?" option that can come in handy during an emergency. But mostly, the 205W represents a significant performance boost over the older Nuvi 200 models.
The 205W is aimed at users who want the benefit … Read more
Gonna make this quick because I'm late for the airport (San Francisco, here I come!). Amazon has the refurbished TomTom One 130 GPS for $47.98 shipped.
That's after a $20 mail-in rebate, but still. The TomTom 130 has some pretty decent features for an entry-level GPS, including text-to-speech and an optional traffic receiver.
You can also have a little fun by adding celebrity voices. Remember the Homer Simpson GPS from a couple weeks ago? You can add that voice, and many others, to the 130.
Amazon doesn't list the warranty, but because this is a refurb, … Read more
Magellan has recently unveiled its newest model, the Magellan Maestro 4700 GPS device. This new unit features an updated aesthetic, a slim profile, and a 4.7-inch wide-format, color touch screen.
You can talk to the Maestro 4700 using its voice command feature; and it will talk back with its text-to-speech capability, using proper street and POI names.
A Predictive Traffic feature works similarly to TomTom's IQ Routes by analyzing past traffic patterns to predict and avoid known trouble spots. However, it looks like the Maestro 4700 does not receive live traffic updates.
The Maestro features Magellan's OneTouch … Read more
