Report: Apple to retain tight control over iPhone apps

Updated at 3:40pm PT after coming across another report.

The latest report on the proposed iPhone software development kit would suggest that Apple is planning a restrictive policy for application development.

iLounge reported Friday that the iPhone SDK will come along with restrictions on what kinds of iPhone and iPod Touch applications can be developed, where they can be sold, and what types of peripheral devices they can access. While not a shock, if true that type of policy will not please software developers who were hoping for more open access to the iPhone.

The specifics? Apple would apparently … Read more

As the iPhone turns

In the wake of yesterday's iPhone software development news, a few positive tidbits related to Apple's iPhone surfaced here and there regarding 3G support, carrier exclusivity, and shipment expectations.

First off, UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois posted a research note--spotted by AppleInsider among others--declaring that Apple has a 3G iPhone slated for the middle of this year using a modem chip from Infineon. The 3G model has long been expected to arrive at some point this year, and could help boost its standing with European customers and business types.

Secondly, Apple COO Tim Cook took the stage at … Read more

Apple: It's business, it's business time

Apple is finally getting ready for the iPhone to mean business.

In its first eight months, the iPhone has been mostly a consumer phenomenon in the U.S. Apple has pitched the device by showing off its iPod capabilities, or how to search the Web for restaurant reservations and car prices, or update your status on Facebook. But next week Apple plans to show off some "exciting new enterprise" features for the iPhone, which will presumably make it easier for those of us who can't push the CIO around to use our iPhones as tools for work.… Read more

Apple planning iPhone SDK event March 6

Apple distributed invitations Wednesday morning for "an iPhone software road map" event next week, which means we're finally going to hear details on the plans for an iPhone software development kit.

As you might be aware, next week is March, not February, which means Apple will have missed its deadline for shipping the SDK this month. Still, on Thursday, March 6, at 10 a.m. PST the company will hold a "town hall" meeting at its headquarters in Cupertino to discuss the State of the iPhone, and probably answer several questions about how iPhone application … Read more

Apple releases new iPhone firmware

It's not a software development kit, but there is something new today for iPhone owners.

Apple released OS X firmware update 1.1.4 Tuesday for the iPhone, saying little about the new features. The last update, 1.1.3, introduced a few new capabilities such as the ability to customize the home page, but the only thing noted as new in 1.1.4 are "bug fixes," which are probably welcome.

It's not clear at this early juncture whether the new update does anything to the legions of jailbroken and unlocked iPhones out in the … Read more

Cutting the cord (metaphorically): the iPhone on vacation proves friend & foe

Recent iPhone ads have touted the utility of having the iPhone on a trip. Vacationing with the iPhone is a great convenience, but also makes it harder to vacation.

Using the quasi-GPS and Google Maps, being able to make dinner reservations, forsaking tour guidebooks and printed itineraries it great. On a recent long weekend to Hawaii, my friends and I discovered and confirmed the utility of the iPhone features on the road. So much so, we didn't even bring our laptops, which is a big deal for some of us. Really, it is. The only physical complaint I had … Read more

Counting down to the iPhone development kit

We're quickly closing in on the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the iPhone, one that could signal just how far Apple can take its maiden voyage into the smartphone world.

This is supposed to be the week that Apple makes honest coders out of all the software developers who have been busy creating unofficial applications for the iPhone almost since the day it was released last June. Back in October, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that the company planned to release an official software development kit (SDK) in February that would allow third parties to … Read more

Apple angst? Why?

ZDNet's Larry Dignan provides a great counterpoint to the recent "angst" over Apple.

Despite the year to date stock chart (right) Apple's business isn't exactly limping along. Sure you can worry about the iPhone not selling 10 million units, or iPod profit margins and even whether the MacBook Air is that big of a deal. But what's the point? Until proven otherwise most of us would love to have Apple's business.

The Macalope has given Dignan a hard time in the past, but this piece is eminently reasonable, raising the issues and providing … Read more

About that $1 billion...

Hey, kids! Do you like math?! Sure you do!

Well, how'd you like to be an analyst at a Wall Street research firm?!

Seriously! It's apparently not as hard as it sounds! Let's have a look!

Just after the Macalope sent off some emails to the writers of the pieces Todd Sullivan linked to to ask who the heck these "analysts" were, he noticed this piece at MarketWatch.

This may not be the same estimate referred to in those pieces, but the number's around $1 billion, so let's take a look at what … Read more

Todd Sullivan: Round 2

On his own site now, Todd Sullivan fires back at the Macalope, asking Is That The Best You Got?

Well, the Macalope doesn't know about "the best". It was OK, he supposes. Good for a Wednesday night. But "best"? Hmm. That's kind of asking a lot, Todd. It's not like yours was very good. Why should the Macalope have to do all the work?

But if you want to go another round, the Macalope's got the time. His nightly frolic with the nymphs doesn't start for another hour.

Sullivan's site, … Read more
