Yahoo, Tumblr tie-up in the works?

While her former employer dominated most of the tech headlines this week at Google I/O, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is working on news of her own. Perhaps.

Late Thursday, a flurry of rumors surfaced about a possible tie-up between Yahoo and Tumblr. AllThingsD started the ball rolling and AdWeek independently confirmed with "multiple sources" that the talks are indeed beaucoup serious with a possible price tag as high as $1 billion.

The rationale: Mayer is keen to attract a younger, hipper demographic for Yahoo. The timing might be right. According to AdWeek, Tumblr "has been looking … Read more

Yahoo lucks out; Mexican court chucks $2.75B damages award

A Mexican court ruled last November that Yahoo and Yahoo Mexico had to shell out a whopping $2.75 billion in a lawsuit over a yellow pages listing service's lost profits. On Thursday, Mexico's Superior Court of Justice reduced that number to a mere $172,500 in damages.

This is likely welcome news to the tech company. Damages of $2.75 billion is a huge portion of the company's revenue -- in Yahoo's most recently reported quarter, it only generated $1.07 billion in revenue.

The lawsuit was originally filed by the Worldwide Directories and Ideas … Read more

Yahoo adds tweets to its news feed

Yahoo's news feed will now include tweets from Twitter, CEO Marissa Mayer announced Thursday in a blog post, cheekily titled "@yahoo delivers #bestoftheweb."

The company will roll out the new feature to U.S. desktop and mobile users over the next few days. Mayer has been trying to breathe new life into the company by buying mobile startups, updating Yahoo's home page, and now by harnessing the popularity of Twitter as a news source.

"Updates direct from politicians, celebrities, media outlets, and other publishers have become an important source of real-time news and information. 140 … Read more

Marissa Mayer's sprint for daylight

Over the last several weeks, Marissa Mayer has talked about "sprinting." She is referring to Yahoo's run for daylight, after years of stumbling and being viewed as yesterday's Internet company.

Mayer's formula for a Yahoo resurgence starts with a sprint to get the "right people in place, and culture and energy where we want it to be so we can really run," she said during an interview last week at the Wired Business conference.

In her nine months as CEO, she has been adding and subtracting to Yahoo's talent pool, and rounding … Read more

Path product management director Dylan Casey is heading to Yahoo, a new report and Casey's own tweets have suggested.

Yahoo reportedly looking to dump Microsoft search pact

Marissa Mayer has previously noted her disappointment in Yahoo's Web search partnership with Microsoft and now reportedly wants to get out of the deal altogether.

The Web giant's chief executive has been trying to find a way to escape the foundering arrangement but has so far been unsuccessful, a person familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal. Mayer has been looking to cancel the deal since leaving Google to take over Yahoo last summer, the Journal reported.

The two companies entered into a 10-year search partnership in 2010 in which Microsoft would power Yahoo search and … Read more

Marissa Mayer's moonshot: Yahoo on every device

NEW YORK--Marissa Mayer has clear vision of what a moonshot -- an epic accomplishment -- would be for Yahoo. She wants Yahoo persistent on every smartphone, tablet and PC for every Internet user.

"The nice thing is that we are not that far off," the Yahoo CEO said in conversation with Wired senior writer Steven Levy at the Wired Business Conference.

Mayer could add wearable computers as well. She said that Yahoo is experimenting with developer versions of Google Glass to see how users can operate Yahoo's apps using the digital eyewear.

Yahoo experimenting with Google Glass, CEO Mayer says

NEW YORK--Yahoo is experimenting with Google Glass, Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said Tuesday.

Google's Internet-connected eyewear has generated a lot of buzz, but it's still too early to know if it will take off. So far, the glasses come with few apps and limited functionality, but many developers are working on creating software for Glass, spurred in part by some big Silicon Valley investors looking to back startups making Glass apps.

Mayer said Tuesday at a Wired business conference in New York that Yahoo has gotten its hands on some developer versions of Google Glass, and employees … Read more
