HTC teases new device on eve of announcement

HTC has taken to Facebook and Twitter to begin teasing a new product less than 24 hours before its debut.

To tease its followers, HTC paired the above image with the phrase "When beautiful hardware meets stunning software." Looks great, right, but what is it? At last check, it could be one of a number of devices, including an Android smartphone or two Android-based tablets.… Read more

iPhone 6: 9 most-wanted features

The iPhone 5 is here and millions of people will buy it and love it. But its arrival also starts the clock ticking on the next iPhone. Approximately a year from now Apple will have a new model, which may be the iPhone 6 or simply be another iteration of the 5 (a lot of people have their money on a 5S).

What will the next iPhone have that this one doesn't? That I don't know, but I do have a wish list for what I'd like it to have.

New iPad Mini model hits the Web, but is it the real thing?

Apple's iPad Mini doesn't even exist, but yet another mockup of the device's appearance has surfaced.

Chinese tech site BoLoPad today published photos of what it claims is the iPad Mini. The images show a 7.85-inch tablet with an aluminum back casing. That casing includes the Apple logo, a hole for a camera, and the typical iPad markings, including the device's storage amount and legal jargon.

When examined at different angles, the device appears to resemble those leaked already, with the small Lightning connector on the bottom flanked by two speaker ports. One of the … Read more

5-inch HTC phablet tipped to be Droid Incredible X

Move over Samsung and LG, there's new evidence that HTC may be readying a "phablet" of its own for Verizon.

According to a trusted insider close to HTC Source, the smartphone is slated to boast a 5-inch 1080p HD display with a screen resolution of 1794 x 1080 and a ludicrous 480 pixels per inch (ppi). Inside it will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and boast other top features.

Before going any further, I have to address the handset's name, which is reported to be DIx, which is short for Droid Incredible X. That makes … Read more

Why the iPad Mini will cost at least $349

Apple may have just priced itself into a corner.

At least week's product launch event, the company unveiled a new, fifth-generation iPod Touch with a slightly larger screen, better camera, faster processor, and so on. Starting price: $299.

Meanwhile, the rumor mill continues to churn about an iPad Mini that could appear as early as next month, potentially obliterating Amazon's Kindle Fire and other competitors in the 7-inch tablet market (much as the current iPad has dominated the 10-inch market).

Indeed, many have speculated that a $249 iPad would spell doom for the Kindle Fires and Nooks of … Read more

Rumor Has It: The anti-iPhone 5 episode

Well, the iPhone event finally happened, and now we have nothing to talk about.

Just kidding!

We decided that everyone must be sick of talking about the new iPhone, so we did everyone a favor -- including ourselves -- and talked about everything but that. Hallelujah!

On this week's show, we continue to not care about HTC's possible tablets; we talk to TechCrunch's favorite sources and learn that a browser-based version of Spotify might be in the works; and on Thursday we will finally learn Wii U pricing and its release date -- that's almost two … Read more

New Apple Dock connector to be known as 'Lightning,' report says

Apple's iPhone 5 won't be the only product unveiled today at its press event.

The company today is expected to show off a new, 9-pin Dock connector to replace its current 30-pin option. That new Dock connector will be called Lightning, 9to5Mac is reporting, citing sources. The blog's sources say the name comes from the 9-pin connector's ability to more quickly sync with computers than its predecessor.

The 9-pin connector has shown up in some purported images of the iPhone 5's casing. It has also been met with some criticism from those who aren't … Read more

iPhone 5 rumor roundup

Editors' note (September 12, 2012): It's official, folks. The iPhone 5 is for real. Our first impressions, plus additional full coverage.

Well, it's been a long time coming. Tomorrow, Apple is expected to finally announce the next iPhone. Whether it's going to be named the iPhone 5 or "the new iPhone," have a bigger screen, or come with seven arms sticking out of it, we've sifted (and sometimes trudged) through months and months of rumors that will either be confirmed or done away with come tomorrow. As archivers of the iPhone rumor mill, it has been entertaining, but we're looking forward to a brief moment of peace until a whole new batch of rumors comes out for the next iteration. Until then, remember to join us during our live blog tomorrow as the iPhone specs are unveiled and the bets get settled. (Who put $5 on NFC, anyone, anyone?)

Tune in Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. PT for our Apple iPhone event live blog.

After unveiling a marginally improved iPhone 4S in 2011 instead of a radically different iPhone 5, Apple has returned to its development labs to cook up (no pun intended) the next iteration of its popular phone. In 2012, we're fairly certain that the real iPhone 5 will roll out of Apple's gates and that the device should be a bigger leap forward than the 4S was.

That's why after taking some time off at the end of last year, we've resurrected CNET's iPhone 5 rumor roundup to cover the new tidbits from 2012. So join us again in watching the rumor mill churn. We'll add to it until we get the real thing; please let us know if we've left any gossip out.

September 10, 2012 Those previously mentioned plugs may be the size of Micro-USB Not satisfied with just posting pictures of the supposedly new iPhone 5 plugs, Nowhereelse is now reporting that these updated dock connectors may be the same size as a Micro-USB port. In addition to the new phone sporting the smaller port, other future devices, like the next iPad, will include it too.… Read more
