iPad Mini won't be the only Apple news

Monday's CNET Update dusts off the crystal ball:

Everyone is eager to learn about the rumored iPad Mini, but today's tech news roundup looks at what else Apple will be announcing. We're expecting to see at least one new computer, such as an iMac or Mac Mini. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that the Mac Pro will get an update in 2013, so it may be too soon to announce that. As for laptops, there have been reports that Apple will give the 13-inch MacBook Pro a retina display.

Speculation surfaces re Retina iPad update and Mini pricing

Apple's 9.7-inch Retina iPad may get refreshed, according to a report. And a separate report offers some speculation about iPad Mini pricing.

The Retina iPad will get a Lightning connector like the iPhone 5, according to 9to5Mac, citing unidentified sources.

And, if true, that may not be all.

The updated 9.7-inch Retina iPad could address issues with the first-generation Retina product. That includes making it lighter and improving the LED backlight apparatus, according to a previous CNET report, based on comments from Richard Shim, a DisplaySearch analyst.

Leaked 13-inch Retina MacBook pics show ports, not much else

More photos claiming to depict the parts, and in fact, a working version of Apple's unannounced 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, have surfaced.

MacRumors points to a forum post on Chinese technology site WeiPhone that features a slew of inside and outside of shots of what is said to be the smaller notebook.

Today's additions show the configuration of six battery packs arranged within the inside of the machine (see the photo on the right), as well as the left- and right-hand sides of the assembled computer. These sides may not be all that exciting, but they … Read more

Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro rumored to start at $1,699

The rumored 13-inch version of Apple's MacBook Pro with a Retina Display will cost some $500 more than Apple's existing, non-Retina 13-inch model, according to a new report.

Citing "wholesale prices," 9to5Mac says the 13-inch model of the notebook will start at $1,699 when it goes on sale next week. That's $500 less than the entry-level version of Apple's 15-inch model with a Retina Display, but also $500 more than the entry-level 13-incher on the non-Retina side.

Apple, of course, has not announced the smaller version of the Retina-equipped Pro, but its arrival … Read more

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro due with iPad Mini, report claims

The iPad Mini isn't the only thing reportedly slated for an event later this month. Pencil in a new Retina MacBook Pro, too -- so a report is claiming.

Apple will unveil a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display alongside the iPad Mini, a report at 9to5Mac says, citing a "consistently reliable source" at a "high-profile U.S. retailer."

That would support a CNET report last week that said production of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is on track.

This wouldn't be Apple's first MacBook with a Retina display, of course. … Read more

Apple may be getting ready to introduce a new iMac with a redesigned body with a thinner profile.

Photos of what is purported to be the new iMac's logic board and other internal components surfaced earlier this month on a forum thread to the Chinese site WeiPhone (Google translation). The poster claims that the image was captured by his or her brother-in-law, who allegedly works in the factory where production is occurring.

The new iMac design is said to include a profile that when viewed from end to end, you "almost cannot see the new iMac's thickness.&… Read more

Photographer sues Apple over promotional eyeball image

Apple has been sued by a Swiss photographer who claims the electronics giant misused one of her images by including it in a promotion for its latest MacBook Pro computers.

Photographer Sabine Liewald claims Apple acquired the rights to use the image of a model's eye (complete with make up) for "layout purposes only," as opposed to commercial use. The complaint specifically points to examples where Apple ended up using the image in its advertising, including on its Web site.

The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York earlier … Read more

A 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display is on track for production, according to an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim has been telling CNET for a while now that a 13.3-inch Retina version of the MacBook Pro (MBP) is slated for production in the fourth quarter. And today Shim reiterated that he sees no change in those production plans.

What's not clear is when Apple would release the new MacBook. Shim speculates that it would happen after the iPad Mini announcement -- which is expected to be released in the coming weeks -- though … Read more
