Google and Asus rumored to be working on $99 Nexus tablet

Could you be able to score a $99 Google Nexus tablet for Christmas this year? That's the latest from the Digitimes rumor mill, which, it should be noted, has a mixed record for getting it right.

Digitimes, apparently relying on anonymous sources in Asus' supply chain, says the companies are collaborating on two new Nexus tablets -- a thinner version of the Nexus 7 that could retail for $199 and another for $99. The report says both new tabs would hit the market by the end of the year in an effort to defend against the anticipated iPad Mini.… Read more

Whose tablet ads are the worst of them all? Apple's, say ad mavens

It's a wonder Apple ever manages to sell any of those pesky iPads.

At least, that seems to be the pulsating thought that oozes from numbers analyzed by a company called Ace Metrix.

These no doubt diligent and well-meaning sorts decided to rate the TV ads for all the different tablets that are currently vying for a place in your living and rest areas.

You may be stunned into the principality of Catatonia to discover that real human beings were allegedly far more moved by ads for the Samsung Galaxy Note, Google's Nexus 7 and even Amazon's … Read more

Kindle Fire HD hot, but Google Nexus 7 grabs more Web traffic

Amazon's new Kindle Fire HD is off to a good start in the market, yet the Nexus 7 remains the tablet to beat, at least in the eyes of mobile ad network Chitika.

Tracking hundreds of millions of ad impressions on its network from September 14 to 18, Chitika compared the Web traffic generated by the the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7.

Only five days after its debut, the Kindle Fire HD racked up 11 percent of all Kindle Fire ad impressions in the U.S. and Canada. That means the new model is doing nicely in … Read more

$199 Kindle Fire HD's display puts Retina iPad on notice

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD display is good enough to challenge the pricier Retina iPad's display and "decisively" beat Google's Nexus 7, said display testing firm DisplayMate.

In an article posted Wednesday, DisplayMate compared the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD with the third-generation iPad Retina and got a surprising result.

"It is much better than the iPad 2 and almost as good as the new [Retina] iPad in overall picture quality and color accuracy," wrote Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate.

For example, the Kindle Fire HD has greens and yellows "that are slightly more … Read more

Google Nexus 7 $25 store credit ends September 30

Consumers eyeing Google's Nexus 7 tablet have until the end of the month to grab a special $25 credit good for anything in the Google Play store.

To lure in new Nexus 7 buyers, Google launched the offer at the same time the tablet debuted in June. But the company tweeted yesterday that the deal will end on September 30.

The announcement isn't a big surprise, as Google has long said the offer had a definitive sell-by date. It gave Nexus 7 owners $25 to spend on music, books, magazines, videos, and apps in the Google Play store. … Read more

Episode 13: the Nexus 7 tablet is a delicate flower

In the Season 2 premiere of Always On, the Google Nexus 7 takes a beating. Well, it wouldn't be fair to say it takes a beating. It receives a beating, and frankly, doesn't handle it very well. It's one of our more dramatic Torture Tests, and I think it points out that sometimes, you do get what you pay for when it comes to quality and durability. The Nexus 7 is a great tablet in many respects but, well. It's not the toughest little thing. You'll see what I mean.

We'll find out in … Read more

iPad Mini mock-up pics emerge

Alleged mock-ups of Apple's iPad Mini emerged today, courtesy of French Web site Nowhereelse.fr.

The photos show a mock-up of the iPad Mini, with a white front, held in various angles. Another photo shows the cases of the larger and smaller iPad stacked with an iPhone 4S and what appears to be the case for the longer iPhone 5.

The photos, which Nowhereelse.fr spotted from Chinese site Dgtle.com, are apparently intended to showcase iPad Mini accessories. It's unclear whether these mock-ups represent the actual iPad Mini, and Apple has declined to comment to CNET.

Always On returns with Nexus 7 Torture Test and more

It's a little unusual for a Web show to have "seasons," I know, but we are trying to create something here that's equal in length and quality to our broadcast cousins, and you can't just do that week after week. So, I know an eight-week season seems a bit on the short side, but hopefully so does a four-week production break.

And when I say "break," believe me, I don't mean we took a break. I had one of the best summers in recent memory: I jumped out of a helicopter to … Read more

Rejoice! Kindle FreeTime brings multi-user support to tablets

The biggest game changer from Amazon's Kindle Fire announcement yesterday wasn't the pricing, dual WiFi antennas or Dolby Digital Plus sound. Rather, it was that Amazon became the first major tablet maker to allow different people to have their own accounts on the same device.

Think how commonplace this is for traditional personal computers. Mac or Windows, both platforms allow multiple people to use the same machine, logging in with different accounts that are linked to their own settings, data, applications and perhaps even special restrictions. But for tablets, it's been the dark ages.

I've found … Read more
