Data speeds: iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 4S

Though its thinner profile and longer screen are two of the iPhone 5's top draws, I'm more interested in what's inside Apple's newest handset. Yes, after a long wait, the iPhone 5 finally adds support for 4G LTE data networks. Of course, I have to point out that a galaxy of Android phones (get it!) have long offered the feature, but that doesn't mean I'm not grateful that at long last the iPhone has caught up.

Apple's Siri trounces Samsung's S Voice (hands-on)

I've updated this hands-on to reflect Siri's new tricks in iOS6; it originally posted June 21, 2012 comparing S Voice on the Galaxy S3 -- which is still current -- to Siri on iOS 5. If you're wondering, tomorrow I'll be comparing the updated Siri to Google Voice Actions.

Voice assistants like Siri, S Voice, Google Actions, and Microsoft's TellMe aren't new, but they are evolving into more mainstream features that can expedite results. S Voice, which launched this summer on the Samsung Galaxy S3, is Samsung's answer to Siri. That also makes … Read more

Rumor Has It: The next next big thing is almost here?

The iPhone 5 should be arriving on millions of doorsteps any moment now (hopefully), so it's time to tally up the scorecards and see how we did. Did we vote that it'd get a bigger screen? How about NFC? Watch the video above and see how we did and how you guys did at home.

Also this week, the next big thing might already be here, but you know what might be coming really soon? The next big thing after the next big thing. What? Also, someone could have a Pandora rival up its sleeves. Bet you can'… Read more

iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S3 hacked in contest

Dutch and British hackers compromised an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S3, respectively, in separate gambits as part of a mobile Pwn2Own contest at a security conference in Amsterdam this week.

Joost Pol, chief executive officer of Dutch research firm Certified Secure, and colleague Daan Keuper created an exploit that allowed them to hijack the address book, photos, browsing history and videos from a fully patched iPhone 4S at the EuSecWest conference, according to CNET sister site ZDNet. And that effort has implications for Apple's new iPhone 5.

"We specifically chose this one because it was present … Read more

Samsung slams iPhone 5 linegoers in new attack ad

Samsung's gone on the offensive on early iPhone adopters once again with a new attack ad.

The commercial -- which to be sure is quite well done -- mocks those waiting for one of Apple's new iPhones in front of the company's retail stores:

The turnaround time is arguably impressive given that Apple debuted the iPhone 5 just a week ago today. Mentioned (and mocked) are things like the new dock connector, larger screen and LTE -- the latter of which are said to be old news by those with Samsung's Galaxy S3. Samsung also pokes … Read more

Apple fans invade Samsung's Facebook page

Alright, children, this just has to stop.

You've had your pillow fight. You're blown your pink bubbles at each other. Now just lie down and get some sleep.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a chance of that happening any time soon.

You'd have thought it was enough with all the fire-breathing and wailing over Samsung's ad that claimed iPhone 5 was the Emperor's new underwear. Yes, Apple's faithful had some fun making their own versions of the ad.

But now they have mounted the ramparts of Samsung's Facebook page.

Samsung downplays rumors of Galaxy S4 for early 2013

Consumers awaiting Samsung's Galaxy S4 may face a longer wait than reported yesterday.

The Korean handset maker today denied rumors that the next Galaxy S phone would launch next March. Loosely translated from the Korean, Samsung's Twitter post stated: "Please note that some media reported speculation that the Galaxy S3 subsequent models will be released in a simple rumor is not true. [If] not doing anything, why spread these rumors?"

The buzz spread quickly yesterday after an unnamed Samsung official told the Korea Times that the company is ready to launch the Galaxy S4 at next … Read more

Now Nokia joins the anti-iPhone 5 party

Now the playground is full of name-callers.

First there was Samsung's muscle-baring, fact-sharing anti-iPhone 5 ad, which ran yesterday. You know, the one that said the Galaxy S3 is full of features and the iPhone 5, well, isn't.

And now Nokia is stiffening its fins in order to declare that its fine Lumia is happily better than Apple's long-faced newcomer.

Just as news of Samsung's ad came through on the hottest of wires, Nokia took to its Twitter account to declare: "Lumia 920: Wireless charging, amazing camera, screen you can use with gloves on and … Read more

Apple fanboys fight back against Samsung

Today's focus is squarely on the concepts of justice and hurt.

When one person hurts you, should you give them another chance? Or should you expose them publicly for the myopic, self-centered, vacuously cruel, mendacious individual that you believe them to be?

Yes, I am talking about the painful rumors that Robert Pattinson has taken Kristen Stewart back.

However, a passing observation is that Apple fanpersons have chosen the latter option, rather than Pattinson's former.

For they find the Samsung ad that runs today all over America -- the one in which Samsung declares its Galaxy S3 to … Read more

Samsung attacks iPhone 5 in new ad

I don't think they've kissed and made up yet.

I don't even think they're talking.

When one party embarrasses another so badly -- and in public -- you don't expect the hurt one to just take it, do you?

And so Samsung is greeting the arrival of the iPhone 5 with an ad that will run tomorrow in certain national and local newspapers (how modern). It is not a flattering ad. It suggests that the iPhone 5 isn't even good enough to be, well, a copy of the Galaxy S3.

Clearly, it's been … Read more
