Messenger for Zune HD released

Yesterday the Windows Live team at Microsoft announced the release of Messenger for the Zune HD.

I'm not much of a Messenger user, but one of the big things Microsoft added to the new version of the desktop app is Facebook integration, and that same functionality is built into the Zune version of Messenger. After connecting your Facebook and Windows Live accounts, you can see all Facebook updates and conduct Facebook chats from within the Messenger app. (There's already a standalone Facebook app for the Zune HD; this new app is best suited for users who straddle the … Read more

Flickr adds in-browser uploading for Android

Android users looking to upload photos and videos to Flickr now have a new way to do it. Today the company rolled out an enhanced version of its m.flickr.com mobile site that lets users upload within Android's browser.

This behavior should be familiar to desktop users of Flickr, though on mobile phones this process hasn't exactly been carried along for the ride. In this case, it's about as close as you can get to that same desktop experience, though you can only upload one photo or video at a time. Another big difference is that … Read more

Flickr tallies 5 billion photos

Flickr is now hosting more than 5 billion photos, the company announced on its blog yesterday.

According to the Yahoo-owned photo site, user "yeoaaron" uploaded the site's 5 billionth photo on Saturday. The image shows the Woodwards Collage in Vancouver, B.C.

Flickr says more than 3,000 images are uploaded to the site every minute. It reached 2 billion photos in 2007. It hit the 3 billion mark a year later in 2008.

Get a 4GB Eye-Fi Share Video card for $34.99

I've always liked the Eye-Fi memory cards, which wirelessly beam photos from your digital camera to your PC and/or an online service like Flickr or Facebook. But I always thought they were way, way overpriced.

Not anymore. Buy.com has the 4GB Eye-Fi Share Video SD card for $34.99 shipped--far and away the lowest price I've seen. (Current price on the Eye-Fi site: $64.)

In case you're not familiar with it, the Eye-Fi is a standard-size SDHC memory card (meaning it's compatible with most cameras) with a built-in Wi-Fi radio.

NASA brings historic photos to Flickr Commons

NASA is now providing images detailing its early years on Flickr's Commons archive, the space agency announced on Monday.

NASA's new Commons page displays nearly 200 photos taken throughout the venerable organization's early history. They're arranged in three photo sets, including "Building NASA," "Launch/Takeoff," and "NASA Center Namesakes."

The photos available on Flickr aren't available exclusively on that site. In fact, since 2007, NASA has been working with the Internet Archive to display its historic photos. But according to NASA, it decided to bring some of those images … Read more

Flickr's photo page redesign now live for all

Flickr's redesigned homepage, which increased the size of photos as well as moving and highlighting several of the service's features, is now live to all users.

The new look was launched as an opt-in beta back in late June. Back then, Matthew Rothenberg who is Flickr's head of product, told CNET that the plan was to roll it out to everyone after a month of testing. Just a week late on that estimate, the company now says it's been released to 100 percent of users as the default style.

The automaker announced the new Web site, "Buick's Moment of Truth," last month. Buck hopes the Web site well help it rebrand the classic model and entice a younger generation … Read more

Lightroom plug-in helps avoid overlarge JPEGs

It's a fair question for photography enthusiasts uploading their latest shots to the Web or backing up an archive: where do you set the JPEG quality slider?

Sure, a higher setting means more quality but bigger files, but beyond that vagueness, it's a question without easy answers. Happily, at least for those using Adobe Systems' Lightroom software for photo editing and cataloging, there's an answer coming.

That's because Lightroom plug-in programmer Jeffrey Friedl is adding some quality automation tools to his image export software. Earlier this month he posted an analysis of Lightroom's JPEG photo qualityRead more

Flickr goes wider, gets faster with redesign

Flickr is unveiling a dramatic face lift on Wednesday that takes the Yahoo-owned photo-sharing site into the wide-screen era. Both photo pages and the site's home page have been stretched out to accommodate users with wider screens, as well as to put more of an emphasis on what users have uploaded.

Photos now get 640 pixels of width, instead of the previous 500, which makes for a 30 percent increase in size. While seemingly a small boost when compared to the originals of photos (which can stretch to close to 10 times that size), that extra space ends up … Read more
