Save now, read later

Those already using the bookmarking tool Read It Later will appreciate being able to sync lists of unread stories between desktop computers and the iPhone or iPod Touch. For those who are new to Read It Later, the free version isn't quite as convenient as it could be, though the application is still one good way to flag stories of interest for later perusing, without having to bookmark each one individually.

The initial setup to bookmark the plug-in is a multistep process, but one the application's developer guides you through in text, pictures, and a video. Registration is … Read more

Read It Later's new iPhone app works offline

Read It Later (download), the bookmarking meets productivity tool has a new iPhone app out (review it). It lets you sync up with your desktop reading list and pick up stories while away from your computer. But the real reason to get it, is that like the desktop version it lets you save stories for offline reading, giving you a way to catch up on content even when you're away from a sturdy data connection.

There's both a free and pro version. The pro version, which costs $2.99, adds in things like a bookmarklet for saving links … Read more

Getting a read on the squashed-flat bookmark

Wanted: good-looking fella seeks book-loving gal; easily flattened by all the attention.

If he's your guy, meet Dead Mark, the only man you'll ever need in your life. Never mind the ominous-sounding name, Markie here'll never give you grief. Instead, he'll bring along plenty of enjoyment between the pages.

Just one wee catch: he's a little yellow-complexioned, and comes related to Dead Fred, Hanging Harry, Splat Stan, and Stress Paul. If you don't mind his family of deadbeat delinquents, this awfully cute silicone bookmark can be found at quirky retailer Suck UK, though be … Read more

Foxmarks becomes Xmarks

Originally known as Foxmarks, Xmarks takes the original, bookmark-synchronizing concept behind the plug-in and mashes it with a style of Web site discovery reminiscent that should feel familiar to users of StumbleUpon or Del.icio.us.

Xmarks maintains its utility in this major update, retaining focus on synchronizing your bookmarks so you can access them from any computer running Firefox. A simple start-up wizard guides you through the set up, after which it indexes your bookmarks. After installing Xmarks on a second computer, it gives a choice to merge or junk bookmarks from either rig. New to this version are … Read more

Not enough IE integration

We found it ironic that an app called Bookmark Killer actually adds a desktop display of your Internet Explorer Favorites. When we get rid of unused links in our Favorite's menu, the idea is generally to reduce the clutter, not add to it.

At first run, Bookmark Killer locates IE Favorites and displays them in a left-hand sash on your desktop. You can see entry details or just the clickable bookmark name and the date the entry was added. The latter makes the program's interface slightly smaller, but it's still a lot of desktop real estate to … Read more

Lacks browser integration

We liked the premise of this bookmarking tool, which offers a thumbnail view of the pages in your bookmarks list to make it easier to find the one you want. In practice, CORB Bookmark Thumbnail doesn't completely integrate with your browser, or allow you access to any user settings.

The program doesn't ask you whether or not you want the additional desktop shortcut it adds, or if you want to keep its default setting of launching automatically at startup. CORB Bookmark Thumbnail also doesn't allow the user to change these settings through an options menu, so you'… Read more

Bare-bones browser

The publisher of this free Web browser touts the numerous tools that have supposedly been packed into it. But after giving it a run-through, we were left wondering what the fuss is about.

MyWeb Final has an extremely bland user interface. It includes a URL field, plain navigational buttons, and buttons for adding sites to your favorites list. Though it claims to work with your current browser, it failed to import any of our bookmarks, and a blank page appeared when we clicked on the View Favs button. The Add to Favs button did add new URLs to our favorites … Read more

Fails to impress

Orca Browser offers users the standard features found in many of the more popular Web browsers, all of which work very well, but the extras it throws into the mix failed to impress.

Though a little on the cluttered side, the user interface will look familiar to you. Navigational and command buttons are at the top of the window. Menu options give you access to more customization options to change the view, as well as the standard Internet options for managing your browsing history. There's an auto-fill feature that saves you the hassle of signing in and out of … Read more

Yahoo MyWeb bites the dust

Yahoo said on Friday that it will discontinue its MyWeb service on March 18 and is encouraging people to use other Yahoo bookmarking services.

"As we have continued to innovate with the 2.0 release of Delicious and the upgraded Yahoo Bookmarks, we saw that MyWeb users' needs are being served by our newer products," the company said in a posting on its Yahoo Search Blog.

The company has been de-emphasizing the service since at least October 2006 when it started sending MyWeb users to Delicious and offering them the option of using Yahoo Bookmarks.

Yahoo launched MyWeb … Read more

Magnolia still down, but not out

Social bookmarking site Magnolia, which suffered an extensive data loss last week, has posted a new update that says attempts at restoring user data have been unsuccessful. The site continues to be offline while repairs are made--a process Magnolia founder Larry Haff tells us is still ongoing.

Since last week he's been in touch with a handful of other services that might be able to do something with the data that's left. One of those places is Diigo, where Haff is encouraging users to begin a "new collection."

Haff is also pointing users toward tools that, … Read more
