Iger sees six-figure payday for joining Apple's board

Disney President and CEO Robert Iger will be pulling in just over six figures after joining Apple's board, when you consider both his annual retainer and his initial grant of restricted stock units.

In an SEC filing today, Apple noted that Iger--who joined Apple's board of directors yesterday--will get "the standard $50,000 annual retainer" which is to be paid out in quarterly installments.

Additionally, Iger gets an initial grant of 142 restricted stock units, as part of the company's Director Plan, worth about $55,000 based on Apple's current trading price. According … Read more

Apple named Arthur D. Levinson as non-executive chairman of its board and added Disney CEO Robert Iger as a board member, the first board-level reshuffle the company has made since the passing of co-founder Steve Jobs almost six weeks ago.

Levinson, a molecular biologist who is also chairman and former CEO of Genentech, has been the co-lead of Apple's board since 2005. Before that, he came on as a board member in 2000, and has … Read more

T-Mobile SpringBoard review: The high-school girlfriend of tablets

I'm against signing up for multiyear contracts for tablets. The way I see it, the market is still too young to be committed to only one device for so long.

My advice is the same my uncle gave me in high school: it's best to shop around and not be tied down to any single device. Only he was referring to girls, if I remember correctly.

It's a smart move, but there's always going to be that really appealing, um, device that seems like a great deal and casts doubt on your belief that doing the smart thing is the same as the right thing. You know that tablet that totally works for you and is really cool and exciting at first and you start thinking, "Hey, maybe this is the last tablet I need".… Read more

Facebook guidelines for employers and employees

Imagine you referred to your supervisor as a "scumbag" in a Facebook post read by your coworkers. You might expect to be looking for a new job very soon thereafter, especially if your employer has a policy that prohibits making disparaging remarks about the company or posting anything about the organization or its managers without permission.

In a case involving Facebook posts by workers for an ambulance service, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) determined that the employee's name-calling was "protected activity" because it occurred away from the workplace and on non-work time.

The employer … Read more

HP's Ray Lane on why Leo Apotheker had to go

HP Executive Chairman Ray Lane said the board had to make a leadership change because the company habitually missed financial targets, botched communications, lost credibility with Wall Street, and couldn't rally HP's 320,000 employees.

While much of HP's conference call today to introduce Meg Whitman as CEO revolved around her capabilities, a lot of Lane's time was spent explaining why former CEO Leo Apotheker had to go. Lane went through a series of explanations. Here's a look at why Lane and the board arrived at the Apotheker decision.

Apotheker couldn't run a large company. Lane said:… Read more

Clinton chief of staff Bowles joins Facebook board

Facebook has appointed Erskine Bowles to its board of directors, the social network announced today.

With him, Bowles is bringing serious political power to Facebook's board. In 1993, Bowles served President Bill Clinton as administrator of the Small Business Administration. Most recently, Bowles served as the co-chair for President Barack Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.
