Some Adidas Web sites remain offline today as a result of a "sophisticated" cyber attack discovered last week, the German sportswear company said.

"On November 3, 2011, the adidas Group found out that it was the target of a sophisticated, criminal cyber-attack. Our preliminary investigation has found no evidence that any consumer data is impacted," the company said in a statement on its news stream site. Hackers targeted about 50 organizations--including chemical and defense companies--in a global wave of cyber espionage attacks this summer, Symantec said in a report released today.

The goal apparently was to steal intellectual property such as design documents, formulas, and manufacturing processes. "The purpose of the attacks appears to be industrial espionage, collecting intellectual property for competitive advantage," according to the report. (PDF)

A U.K. domain name registrar confirmed today that an attack on its system redirected traffic for some of its customers' sites to a Web page controlled by hackers.

Fewer than a dozen domain names registered by NetNames were affected by the attack, which occurred on Sunday, according to Stuart Fuller, a spokesman for NetNames parent Group NBT. He declined to name the sites that were redirected.

WikiLeaks was targeted in a Web attack yesterday that left the site down for an extended period of time.

The organization announced on its Twitter account around 4:30 p.m. PT that its site was "presently under attack," adding that information from its pages could be accessed on other domains it owns. Over the course of the next three hours, WikiLeaks continued to provide updates, pointing people to its alternative sites as it worked on getting its home page back up. For an unknown period of time this weekend, Gmail users in Iran who tried to access their accounts were at risk of having their log-in credentials stolen, after someone broke into a Dutch company to steal the digital equivalent of an identification card for Google.com.

"The people affected were primarily located in Iran," Google said in a post late last night. "The attacker used a fraudulent [Secure Sockets Layer] certificate issued by DigiNotar, a root certificate authority that should not issue certificates for Google (and has since revoked it)."

A hacker accessed personal details of Nokia developers in an attack on the Nokia Developer site last week, the phone manufacturer has admitted.

The intrusion resulted in the apparent attacker, pr0tect0r AKA mrNRG, redirecting visitors to the Nokia Developer Community forum to a page berating Nokia for its server security. Yesterday, Nokia told forum members that it had originally believed "only a small number" of their records had been accessed, but it had since revised that analysis.
