North Korea has introduced its own smartphone in the form of an Android-powered AS1201 Arirang. Named after a Korean folk song, the phone is reported to be manufactured in North Korea using "indigenous technology".
The Arirang made its debut on state-controlled KCNA TV when the government mouthpiece showed images of Kim Jong-un visiting a "cell phone factory".
As one might expect, not everyone buys the claims of a phone being built in North Korea. For example, the tech site North Korea Tech Blog posits that the Arirang is likely manufactured in China before being boxed up … Read more
Archos is preparing to unveil no less than a dozen new Android devices at the annual IFA conference in early September.
According to an (.PDF) detailing the company's first half 2013 earnings, Archos will soon introduce five Android tablets and seven smartphones. Unfortunately, the French hardware maker shed few details on the upcoming products, painting with only broad strokes.
Smartphones all look kind of the same, don't they? Candy-bar designs with touch screens that are big, small, and everything in between seem to rule the market.
So it's nice to know that Samsung is still trying to shake things up, at least abroad. A new rumor popped up this week, alleging that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Folder, a flip-phone Android handset, possibly for the Chinese market.
Not to be outdone, HTC could be working on shaking things up, too. Reports of a new phablet, possibly called the HTC One Max, have been coming in fast and furiously lately, and I think this time, they're right on track. What do you think? Would you be into a phone with a 5.9-inch screen? Let me know in the comments.
Bonus clip: A dismembered thumb makes a cameo appearance.
It seems like it was ages ago when BlackBerry dropped the news that BBM would find a home on Android handsets. Apparently the wait is about to end, at least for owners of Samsung Galaxy phones.
A new report from the folks at N4BB claims that Samsung has officially committed to the messaging app. Specifically, BBM addicts will be able to download BlackBerry Messenger software via the Samsung app store and Google Play store "soon." With BBM, Galaxy users will have access to their BBM accounts, including BBM chats and BBM Groups.
It also appears that BBM functionality … Read more
Make a Note in your calendar: the new Samsung Galaxy Note will be unveiled on September 4.
Invitations have been sent to press for an announcement on that date, the tagline 'Note the date' giving a clanging clue as to what we can expect.
Like the two previous generations of Note phablets, the Note 3 will be unveiled at annual technology trade show IFA in Berlin, this time at a special event entitled Samsung Unpacked 2013 Episode 2.
Somewhere between a phone and tablet, the original Note was the first phablet. The Note 3 is expected to have a 5.… Read more
If Apple follows its usual release schedule, it could be close to announcing its next phone: the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 or...possibly the iPhone 5C? If some leaked photos are to be believed, Apple is working on a lower-cost alternative to the iPhone.
Even Amazon is betting (hoping!) that this rumor pans out -- you can already preorder cases for a phone that doesn't even exist yet.
In its continual arms race with arch rival Verizon, AT&T announced it has brought 4G LTE data coverage to eight fresh metro areas. The additional coverage zones the carrier says brings its total high-speed wireless footprint to 336 regions.
The specific locations AT&T has brought into the 4G fold are; Greenville, Ala., Troy, Ala., Madera-Chowchilla, Calif., Merced, Calif., Vallejo-Vacaville, Calif., New London County, Conn., Sussex County, Del., and Columbia, Mo. It's all part of Ma Bell's master plan to have 400 4G LTE areas lit up by the end of 2013, servicing an expected … Read more

It's been quite a week for news that starts with the word "smart."
Eric Schmidt was caught last week holding the rumored Moto X smartphone, which opened the flood gates of speculation: When will it come out? Who will carry it? What're the specs?
A leaked alleged release schedule, though, claims to have an answer to at least one of those questions. The Moto X, along with the HTC One, will arrive at Verizon next month.
The smartwatch train is a fast-moving one, and everyone's trying to jump aboard. A new rumor claims that Microsoft is hard at work on a smartwatch of its own, and has put the Surface team on the case. And Apple, not to be outdone, is supposedly "aggressively" hiring people for its iWatch team. … Read more
