Solar iPod case for a desert island

We know people love their iPods, and they understandably want to protect them. But we're curious how far they really need to go. A few months ago, for instance, we cited a titanium case for the Nano that sold for roughly five times the player itself.

The latest suit of armor isn't quite that extreme, but it's definitely more than we would personally need (which isn't saying much, given our slothful ways). The "Bolblbee Solar" may not sound very tough, but don't be fooled--it's "made for adventurers," as Gizmodo says, … Read more

Careful, that DS Lite could blind you

No offense to other types of gadget materials, but we're partial to shiny things ourselves. As a result, we were bummed that we missed out on bidding for 50 Cent's chrome Lamborghini, which went for $310,000 on eBay a few days ago.

But there's at least some consolation in knowing that we could get a chromed-out DS Lite mod to help address our bling fetish until the next big-ticket reflective item comes along. As Technabob notes, the $40 copper and nickel electroplating process makes this version appear a lot more metallic than an official silver modelRead more

To the Batmobile, AMD!

We tend to avoid computer mods on Crave, simply because we could spend every waking moment collecting examples at the expense of anything else. But there's always the exception that's just too good to pass up, whether it be a bomb mod or perhaps one for the holidays. And, of course, anything to do with our hero, Batman.

Here, an enterprising young man named Kevin Core has created a masterpiece in his "Tumbler Batmobile PC" with an AMD Sempron chip, seven "activity LEDs" and a remote-controlled model of the famed vehicle purchased from Wal-Mart, … Read more

In search of Nemo photos, at 200 feet

Little did we know upon our first post on the "Fantasea" line of underwater camera cases that it would be such a prolific business. Since then the company has come out with new models for various cameras every few months. But we can't help but notice that, unlike the cameras themselves, its casings seem to be getting larger.

Of the latest batch, which includes models to fit Nikon's Coolpix L12, S200 and S500 cameras, the S500 casing seems particularly bulky. In the picture accompanying this item, it looks big enough for the camera to do some … Read more

Incoming: Military-grade carrying case for the PSP

Over the years, we've gotten letters from soldiers stationed in Iraq, and they've talked about how hard the place is on electronics gear--and I'm not talking bullets and bombs, but just the raw elements (dust, sand, and so on...). Well, I just noticed this item on PSP Fan Boy: a $100 military-style PSP case from TAD Gear that claims to be military-grade. A note on the site about the PSP Pod reads:

"This is a very special, limited custom run of nylon accessory pouches. These PSP Pods were produced at the request of some our associates … Read more

Will a leather-clad iPhone dominate?

Until the "iGems" line becomes reality, new iPhone owners will need something to distinguish themselves from the pack of 500,000 others who rushed to pick one up in the first weekend alone. Lucky for these rugged individualists, the case-making cottage industry has been working diligently for months.

Luxury accessories are to be expected for a phone that costs upwards of $600, as we've seen in cases made from designer fabrics and even mahogany. In fact, we're surprised there aren't more made of high-end leather, as are the latest from Sena Cases, which MobileWhack says … Read more

iPhone gets wrapped in mahogany

OK, just one more iPhone case (for now). We have an excuse for posting yet another one of these items--it's made of wood. And as we've admitted many times, we have a thing for stuff made of lumber.

The latest entry in Miniot's line of "iWood" accessories is a luxury case for the telephonic idol. This particular example scores double points because it's made of mahogany, not some cheap plywood.

The phone can be used while still in the case, according to Sybarites, because its screen is exposed but protected with a polycarbonate sheet … Read more

Playing dress-up with the iPhone

As noted back in early May, we were shocked that it had taken so long for iPhone cases to begin showing up, some five months after it had been announced. But no sooner was that item printed that the floodgates began to open.

To date, however, most of the gadget-wear has been mundane to mediocre--hardly befitting the most celebrated consumer product launch in memory, if not history. So even if the latest case from urban apparel company LRG isn't exactly your taste, we think it's worthy of mention at least for an attempt at originality beyond the usual … Read more

A laptop case for paramilitary missions

Now this is a laptop case that makes sense to us. There are PCs, keyboards and even USB drives designed to withstand all manner of assault, but our needs aren't so ambitious. In fact, given our sedentary nature, the only time we really worry about damage to our computers is when they're packed away for the car or plane. Which is precisely where RadTech's "MacTruck" comes in.

The aluminum-alloy case, which the manufacturer claims is "rugged enough to drive a truck over," has two steel latch bars to provide maximum protection for a … Read more

Suit of titanium armor for the Nano warrior

Aluminum is for foil. Stainless steel? Barbecues and razor blades. The only metal truly worthy of armoring your precious iPod Nano is titanium.

The "Re-Nano Factron" case by Kiwami Studio is made of the ultra-hardened substance, the type that's been used to protect everything from battlefield spy bots to keyboards and USB drives that can survive being run over by a car in the snow. Engadget says it's available in Japan for around $818--or about five times more than the Nano itself. Now that's what we call commitment.
