Hands-on with the Lenovo S10 Netbook

Those who follow the ever-growing Netbook market have been waiting for one fairly conspicuous straggler to arrive. Lenovo's IdeaPad S10 Netbook was originally announced way back on August 4, but has only just started shipping.

We eagerly checked the incoming-mail pile this morning, and were very excited to find a brand new Lenovo S10 waiting for us. Our review unit had an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a standard 5,400rpm 160GB hard drive, as opposed to the smaller SSD hard drives found in many other Netbooks (including Dell's recent Inspiron Mini 9). The 10.2-inch display has a resolution of 1,024x600, which is standard for 9- and 10-inch Netbooks.

Checking out the Lenovo Web site this morning, only one version of the IdeaPad S10 was available. That model had 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive, with a price of $439 (and a shipping estimate of 2-3 weeks), but the system should be available with other RAM and hard drive options soon. … Read more

New models from Lenovo and the 16:9 display trend: The week in laptops

With the back-to-school shopping season drawing to a close and the holiday shopping season not quite begun, life in the world of laptops is relatively quiet.

Relatively, but not completely: there were a handful of new products for notebook enthusiasts this week. Lenovo unveiled the wide-screen X200 Tablet and a sporty X200s at an event in New York. Dell announced two new business ultraportables, the Latitude E4200 and Latitude E4300. And Averatec launched the Buddy, which promptly won the Crave Best Netbook Name Everâ„¢ award.

Meanwhile, we spent some time with the Asus N10, a Netbook that's not quite … Read more

Review: Lenovo ThinkPad X301

About a month ago, Lenovo refreshed the 13.3-inch ThinkPad X300 (a CNET Editors' Choice winner) by incorporating one of Intel's new ultra-low-voltage Core 2 Duo CPUs, adding a DisplayPort connection, and rechristening it the ThinkPad X301.

As the product name indicates, it's an evolutionary step. The ThinkPad X301's Centrino 2 components helped it post better performance scores than its predecessor without taking a huge toll on battery life.

Despite its high price ($2,920 for our review unit, which included a few upgrades) the ThinkPad X301 remains one of our favorite laptops for travelers, thanks to … Read more

Lenovo debuts X200 Tablet, X200s at NY event

At Thursday's Pepcom press event in New York, Lenovo showed off an updated ultraportable Tablet PC and an even lighter version of the ThinkPad X200.

The ThinkPad X200 Tablet finally brings the wide-screen format to Lenovo's tablet line, with a 12.1-inch display and up to WXGA resolution. Buyers can opt for an LED-backlit option that not only reduces the tablet's weight but should also make for better visibility outdoors. Lenovo also lets you choose between a passive touch-screen that lets you use your finger to navigate menus or an active digitizer that only accepts input from … Read more

HP's fast fashion, Linux wins and losses: The week in laptops

This week, your Intrepid Editor returns from vacation, just in time to catch a Hewlett-Packard laptop-news trifecta. First, the company announced that it had achieved a mobile-computing milestone by getting the HP EliteBook 6930p to operate continuously for 24 hours on a single battery charge. Then came word that the Voodoo Envy 133 laptop, introduced in June, started shipping to customers. And finally, the company brought a bit of geekiness to New York's Fashion Week when a Vivienne Tam-designed HP mininote hit the runways.

Sony also initiated a multipronged attack on the headlines this week, first with its 18.… Read more

No more Linux for consumer-level Lenovos

According to a story at Desktop Linux, Lenovo has quietly stopped offering the Linux OS as a preinstall option for its ThinkPads, IdeaPads, ThinkCenters, and IdeaCenters on its Web site.

In January 2008, Lenovo finally began offering ThinkPads with Linux preinstalled. Now, if you want to purchases any of those systems from Lenovo's Web site, you have no choice but to pay the "Microsoft Tax" and get it with Vista installed. This can be seen as quite a blow to the loyal ThinkPad Linux community, where ThinkPads are the laptops of choice for Linux users.

New Lenovo PCs cue up free Napster service

Buyers of most new Lenovo laptops and desktops will get to relive the good old days of free music via Napster--for a couple of weeks, at least.

The PC maker and the once notoriously embattled digital-music pioneer announced Friday that Lenovo customers will get a free, 14-day trial subscription to Napster To Go. The service lets users listen to songs on their PC and transfer an unlimited number of music tracks to any compatible MP3 player or music-enabled cell phone without paying per track.

The beleaguered online-music company is clearly looking for ways to attract new subscribers. After a high-profile … Read more

Lenovo external hard drive responds to touch

I reviewed the WD My Passport external hard drive recently and thought it was really cool with the storage gauge that lights up when plugged in to show how much storage space has been used. Lenovo has gone one step further with an external hard drive concept that can reveal the same information without even being plugged in.

The concept external hard drive features a finger-touch access button, much like a biometric reader, and an external display. Once you touch the button, the display will show the remaining storage space in the form of simple digits.

It's unclear how … Read more
