Young and old: A side-by-side look at Tumblr, Yahoo audiences

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Yahoo has agreed to acquire 6-year-old blogging powerhouse Tumblr for $1.1 billion. The mammoth deal has sent the Internet into a tizzy, especially since most would have pegged the two companies as unlikely bedfellows just a week ago.

The simplest and most obvious reason for Yahoo's interest in Tumblr can be seen in the chart above, which highlights the dramatically differing demographic profiles for the media portal and the blogging network.

It's a tale of two audiences. Tumblr is a fountain of youth. Yahoo is practically a retirement … Read more

Yahoo quickly gets into the Tumblr spirit

Yahoo's official blog has taken up residency at Tumblr, courtesy of this latest acquisition.

On its Yahoo Yodel page, the company spilled the news about the move not long after it confirmed the $1.1 billion deal to buy Tumblr.

Yodeled Yahoo: "Yay! We're moving! As of today, the Yahoo! official blog is moving to yahoo.tumblr.com. Come on over and check out the new digs!"

Yahoo's first blog on its new Tumblr page fittingly discusses the Tumblr acquisition, with a vow by CEO Marissa Mayer: "We promise not to screw it up.&… Read more

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg said his company saw a major uptick in Tumblr defections after news of the $1.1 billion acquisition by Yahoo came to light.

Writing on his personal blog Sunday evening, Mullenweg said that WordPress usually imports 400 to 600 blog posts per hour from Tumblr. After news of the deal surfaced, the number of imported posts jumped to more than 72,000 blog posts in an hour.

Mullenweg updated his own blog post on Monday morning. "Some people are reading too much into the import numbers -- I don't think there will be an … Read more

Purple Haze: Tumblr faithful blast Yahoo deal

I am drawn to pain like Einstein to thought.

So when I heard that Yahoo had allegedly bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion, there was only one thing to do. (Editors' note: Shortly after this story was published, Yahoo and Tumblr officially announced the acquisition.)

Wrap myself in foil, log on to Tumblr and survey the posts tagged "Yahoo."

I tried to let my eyes waft at random in the hope of finding fair balance or at least something more than purple haze.

The first thing I saw was a post from someone called "world-peace-not-war." I … Read more

Yahoo-Tumblr: 7 ways to evaluate the union

Marissa Mayer views success as every Internet user in the world spending some time every day engaging with Yahoo properties. "We want to be product that people use on a daily basis, at least some part of it," the Yahoo CEO says.

Now the question will be just how the $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr can actually help Yahoo become more of a daily habit.

Tumblr will be operated as a separate business, like a child of Yahoo just out of college. As described in Yahoo's press release, "Per the agreement and our promise not … Read more

Could Tumblr turn into Yahoo's MySpace?

Marissa Mayer wants to attract a younger, hipper audience for Yahoo. Its audience of 700 million is aging, and the 18-year-old brand that defined the first era of the Web doesn't have a compelling entry point to attract the coveted 18- to 34-year-old demographic.

Speaking at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology conference this week, Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman said, "We're working hard to get some of the younger folks," and that Yahoo needs content that's more relevant the 18- to 34-year-old bracket.

Yahoo to consider $1.1B price tag for Tumblr this Sunday -- report

Yahoo's board of directors is meeting this weekend to consider buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash, AllThingsD reported Friday.

Unnamed sources told ATD that the deal is entirely in cash, which means Yahoo isn't offering up any stock options for the hip blogging site. The sources also said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer -- who has been trying to turn the large, struggling company around -- thinks buying Tumblr is key to her vision of a new Yahoo.
