AT&T's HTC One X won't be quad-core (and here's why)

BARCELONA, Spain--HTC's newest flagship device, the HTC One X, sounds like a killer phone on paper--Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, huge HD screen, and a quad-core processor. But that's only if you get the global version.

The U.S. version of the device, which is bound for AT&T within the next 60 days, will add LTE capabilities (the global version stops at HSPA+42 support), but will lose its chance to claim the title of America's first quad-core device.

The trade-off for network speed is processing power.

HTC One X is HTC's quad-core, ICS, Beats Audio powerhouse (hands-on)

BARCELONA, Spain--If it's a quad-core Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone you want, then add the HTC One X to your list. Just announced today at Mobile World Congress, the One X is the flagship phone in HTC's new "HTC One" family of devices.

The One X features Android 4.0, the most up-to-date (and coveted) version of the Android operating system, topped with a revamped version of the HTC Sense interface, Sense 4.0. Unlike the buttonless Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the One X features three touch-sensitive buttons below the display, for back, Home, and pulling up recent … Read more

Have no fear later this year if your phone drops in the drink

BARCELONA, Spain--Later this year, some people should be able to buy mobile phones you can take into the shower.

So forecast two companies specializing in waterproof coatings for electronics, HzO and Liquipel, that are showing off their technology here at the Mobile World Congress. There's a certain shock value to seeing high-end Apple and Samsung phones swimming in the drink, but if the companies get their way, you might be able to read an e-book in the bath fearlessly without having to put your iPad in a Ziploc bag first.

Phones with Liquipel coatings "should be on the … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Beam flexes projection power

BARCELONA, Spain--We've talked for years about pico projectors in smartphones, and now at last we get our first glimpse at a phone that's making that detail front and center.

Earlier this morning, Samsung uploaded images on Google+ of the smartphone it's calling the Samsung Galaxy Beam. And later on the eve of Mobile World Congress here, we got our first demo.

The projection seemed high-quality when we saw it this afternoon in a dark room, thanks to the 15 lumens of brightness that it emits, but we'll spend more time with the device over the next … Read more

Nokia likely to unveil Lumia 610 and 900 phones next week

Nokia may finally offer a peek at its new Lumia 610 and 900 phones early next week.

Sources told Reuters that the mobile phone maker will show off both Windows Phone handsets in a news conference scheduled for Monday at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain.

Little is known about the 610 except that it's supposed to be a budget-friendly phone, cheaper than some of the other Lumia handsets. The Lumia 900 has gotten most of the buzz so far, with proud parent Nokia demonstrating the device at last month's CES.

Details are still sketchy on Nokia's Mobile World Congress plans, but there are a few more hints than when the company first made its intention to launch something known.

Don't hold your breath that the handset in question is the Nokia Lumia 910 that was previously "leaked" on a Dutch Web site. While Nokia's PR division kept a strict policy not to comment on rumors or speculation, its head of Imaging Experience of the Nokia … Read more

Pair of unknown LG Androids found ahead of Mobile World Congress

A pair of unannounced LG smartphones are appearing online just four weeks before Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The preliminary details were found in the UPnP Forum (1) (2), a popular spot for spying new devices before they come to market. Aside from the respective model numbers, there's not a ton of information to glean from the actual findings. PocketNow, however, has unearthed additional details.

After piecing together user agent profiles and model numbers, the LG-P700 will run Ice Cream Sandwich and feature a 640x480-pixel display. As that resolution does not fit the typical dimensions for Android handsets, … Read more
