HTC turns to new marketing chief

Ailing smartphone maker HTC has hired a new marketing chief to help turn the company around amid a continuing financial downturn.

Benjamin Ho, the former vice president of business strategy and marketing at Taiwanese network FarEasTone and former chief marketing officer of Motorola, will replace John Wang as HTC's chief marketing officer.

Wang's departure was not explained, but the company said he will leave the firm in December, and Ho will begin in January and will be "leading HTC into its next phase of brand marketing and awareness," the firm said in a statement.

iPad still dominates tablets, but Android grabs market share

Apple's iPad continues to dominate the tablet market, but Google's Android appears to be taking a bite out of Apple's market share.

The iPad lineup made up 55 percent of tablet shipments in the third quarter, according to data released today by ABI Research, a 14 percent decline from the second quarter and its lowest level since the iPad's introduction in early 2010.

iPhone 5 propels iOS ahead of Android on U.S. smartphones

The iPhone 5 has proved to be a major factor in Android's battle with Apple's iOS.

According to new data published today by research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, iOS was able to nab 48.1 percent of the U.S. smartphone market during the 12-week period ended October 28, just beating out Android's 46.7 percent share.

Analysts turn negative on Windows 8 prospects

Windows 8 got pummeled today by analysts, who cited it as a major factor in tepid PC growth.

The launch of a new Microsoft operating system rarely, if ever, goes smoothly. But Windows 8 is having an especially bumpy takeoff.

The first reason Deutsche Bank listed today for cutting its PC estimates this quarter was a "lackluster initial uptake of Windows 8," in a research note from analyst Chris Whitmore.

Android takes 90 percent smartphone share in China in Q3

Android's dominance in the Chinese smartphone market only strengthened in the third quarter, according to new data.

During the third quarter, Android owned 90.1 percent of China's smartphone market, up from from 83 percent in the second quarter, according to Beijing-based research firm Analysys International. Meanwhile, Apple's iOS, which owned 6 percent of the market in the second quarter, fell to 4.2 percent in the third quarter. Symbian dropped to 2.4 percent market ownership, according to Analysys.

Google Free Zone aims at connecting developing countries

Google has launched a new service designed to get users in developing countries to access its core offerings.

Dubbed Free Zone, the service is launching first in the Philippines starting today. Users in that country will be able to access Google Search, Gmail, and Google+ from their mobile devices without incurring any data charges.

T-Mobile boosts 4G coverage in attempt to lure iPhone users

T-Mobile today added Baltimore, Houston, and Washington, D.C. to the list of U.S. cities served by 4G (HSPA+) on its faster 1900 network.

"As a part of our $4 billion plan to transform our network, T-Mobile continues to strengthen an already fast and competitive 4G experience in major metro areas across the country by installing new equipment and retuning our 4G airwaves to work with more devices," T-Mobile USA Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray said in a statement today.

Samsung to ape Nike in corporate makeover -- report

Samsung has enlisted Scott Bedbury, a freelance brand consultant that helped Nike develop several projects, to revamp its corporate identity, Australia-based Channel News reports.

Samsung plans to unveil its new corporate identity in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

According to Channel News, the effort is expansive in its scope, and includes everything from changing Samsung's messaging to customers to eliminating its current logo and developing a new one. The company's advertising will be "linked to lifestyle activities, similar to what Nike does," a source told Channel News.

Android gains in tablets, Apple slows in third quarter, IDC says

Apple's tablet market share took a hit as consumers "sat out" the third quarter in anticipation of the iPad Mini, analyst firm IDC said. Android tablets made gains as a result.

After a strong second quarter, Apple's unit shipment growth slowed in both consumer and commercial (including education) markets, according to an IDC report published Monday.
