Google to unveil Android 4.2, Nexus 4 phone, Nexus 10 tablet

Update, October 27: Google's October 29 Android event has been canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. We'll update you with a separate post when we know more.

Google is betting even bigger on Nexus.

The search giant is set to debut the latest version of its Android operating system, known as Android 4.2, at an event scheduled for October 29 in New York. Rather than the rumored Key Lime Pie, it will be known as Android 4.2+, or an updated version of Jelly Bean, according to a person familiar with the announcement.

Ultra High Definition officially replaces 4K

The display format formerly known as 4K will now be called "Ultra High Definition" in the home, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced in California today.

The CEA said it chose Ultra HD to denote that it has a higher resolution than the existing 1,920x1,080 pixels of full high definition.

To qualify as Ultra HD, a display needs to have a resolution of at least 3,840 pixels horizontally and at least 2,160 pixels vertically, the CEA said. Additionally, the product will require at least one 4K-capable digital input and display 4K content natively without … Read more

Samsung, LG to delay 55-inch OLED TVs until 2013

You might not have the privilege of being able to pay something like $10,000 for a shiny new OLED TV this year after all.

According to DisplaySearch, a display industry analysis firm, problems with manufacturing will keep both LG and Samsung from releasing their 55-inch OLED TVs in 2012.

"Samsung and LG recently scrapped their plans to mass-produce 55-inch OLED televisions this year as the companies are having serious difficulties in improving manufacturing yield," said an unnamed DisplaySearch official in The Korea Times earlier today.

"Samsung and LG planned to start selling OLED TVs at major … Read more

While both carrier models sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU and a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display, Sprint boosted the handset's camera from 8 megapixels, which is what the AT&T version has, to 13 megapixels.

It will also have a couple of … Read more

LG details Jelly Bean upgrade timeline

Though the LG Optimus G is set to arrive at AT&T stores on November 2 (and later to Sprint), LG isn't still hedging on when it will get an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade.

Yet, for the Optimus G's international brethren, LG is being more forthcoming. A press release (translated) on LG's Web site today detailed the expected time frame for an Android 4.1 update for a select few Optimus models.

Things get started in November with the Optimus LTE II, followed in December by the international Optimus G. Then, the first quarter … Read more

AT&T's LG Optimus G available November 2 for $199.99

AT&T announced today that it will be offering the quad-core LG Optimus G starting November 2 for $199.99 after a two-year carrier agreement. Preorders for the 4G LTE device begin tomorrow.

We had a chance to review the device recently, and we have to admit, this device is fast. Its zippy quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU make it a snap to handle, and its 4.7-inch screen is gorgeous. Pictures and videos appeared crisp and bright, and gameplay was vivid and speedy.

The phone did have a few missteps, however. AT&T's Optimus G … Read more

LG's Nexus 4, tech's worst-kept secret, gets outed again

LG's Nexus 4 might just be the worst-kept secret in the technology world.

Jason Parks, a Texas-based software engineer who works for Google, published photos on his Google+ page over the weekend of his son sleeping. Although that might seem innocuous enough, after users clicked the "Photo details" link to the side of the images, EXIF data contained in that pane revealed it was taken with the Nexus 4.

An LG Electronics employee also posted images to Google+ that contained mention of a Nexus 4 camera. However, unlike Parks' images, the LG photos have been removed from … Read more

LG Nexus 4 outed in new photo dump, report says

A Web site in Belarus has posted images of what it claims is the upcoming LG Nexus 4.

The site, Onliner (translate), today said it has obtained an LG Nexus 4 unit and released several pictures to prove it. The image appears to show a device that looks similar to the LG Optimus G, but not exactly the same. According to the site, the handset comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera. The display measures 4.7 inches.

Nearly all the specs mentioned in the post follow earlier rumors surrounding the Nexus 4. … Read more

Latest launch rumor re Nexus 4 from Google, LG: October 29

The LG Nexus 4 rumor hurricane is beginning to gain strength off the coast of Android-land. The latest word is that a new Google phone could make landfall October 29.

The source of this speculation is unusual -- a French paper not known for tech scoops -- but if nothing else, the product name cited by Le Figaro lines up with the name of the rumored phone we saw outed on Carphone Warehouse earlier.

Making the date all the more interesting is the fact that it overlaps with the start of the AllThingsD "Dive Into Mobile" conference in … Read more
