AT&T: Our iPhone 5 did twice as well as Verizon

AT&T sold twice as many iPhone 5 smartphones as its main competitor, according to mobility chief Ralph de la Vega.

AT&T's closest rival, Verizon Wireless, said last week that it sold 651,000 iPhone 5 units in the third quarter. Based on de la Vega's statement, this means AT&T rang up sales of roughly 1.3 million units. Sprint Nextel reports its results on Thursday.

AT&T further cemented its lead as the preeminent iPhone carrier in the U.S. with 4.7 million iPhones sold in the third quarter. But … Read more

iPad Mini to grab sales from $199 tablets, says analyst

Starting at $329, the iPad Mini is pricier than other mini tablets, but the product will still capture sales from lower-priced rivals, says J.P. Morgan's Mark Moskowitz.

Though the price tag on Apple's new tablet was substantially higher than J.P. Morgan's estimate of $249, the features and specs were better than expected. The analyst had thought the base model would start at 8GB of storage, but Apple kicked it up to 16GB. The Mini lacks the Retina display of its bigger sibling, but Moskowitz was still impressed by the "look-and-feel" of the small … Read more

Add coupons from big-box retailers to Passbook

iOS 6 has been out for just over a month and is already installed on more than 200 million iOS devices across the globe. With such a big user base in such a short amount of time, hopefully we will begin to see an increase in the amount of companies integrating Passbook into their product offerings.

We have already discussed Valpak passes, Starbucks integration, adding random gift cards and even how to create passes for Passbook. All of which were equally useful. And now we can add 20 more big-box retailers to the list, as Coupons.com has rolled out … Read more

Track and lock lost devices. It works.

Find My iPhone is one of those apps you don't need until you need it. When you need it, it's priceless (even though it is free). When turned on, Find My iPhone sends the geolocation data of your device to the servers at regular intervals, allowing you to find your phone from any other device you can log into (including Web browsers). Find My iPhone is installed by default with iOS 5 and 6, but must be turned on to be … Read more

Block calls and texts from selected numbers

Blacklist for iPhone is not available on most iTunes stores, but it can be found on a few download sites. According to the publisher, Blacklist for iPhone allows you to block calls and texts from any number, and suppresses the popup previews for those numbers too. Once you download the app, it installs like any other, but you need a unique ID number and a password to activate it (which costs you $1.99).

The Blacklist for iPhone app has a simple enough interface allowing you to control how the app works. For example, to block a particular number, you … Read more

iPhone 5 traffic volume already surpasses Samsung's Galaxy S3

Apple's iPhone 5 has been available for only a few weeks, but already it's generating more Web traffic volume than the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Online advertising network Chitika today released results of a study it conducted on Web traffic volume between the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3. The company found that of "millions of mobile ad impressions" it recorded on the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3, more than half -- 56 percent -- originated from Apple's handset. Survey: iPhone, iPad ownership surging among teenagers

The surging popularity of iPhones globally is especially pronounced among teenagers, according to a survey published today.

A semi-annual study of 7,700 teens conducted by analysis firm Piper Jaffray found that 40 percent of teens own an iPhone -- almost double the 23 percent of teens who owned an iPhone in Fall 2011. And that's up 6 percent since the spring, the survey found.

"We believe it is a positive sign for the power of the iPhone among younger users that Apple was able to expand its market share with teens despite no new product launches between … Read more

How to simplify sharing your panoramic photos

Sharing a panorama taken with iOS 6 on your iPhone is easy, but takes some work on the recipients end to view. The photo isn't all that tall, it's wide and only provides a general overview of the entire photo unless you pinch and zoom. Then you'll need to swipe back-and-forth until you can view the entire photo. It works, but it's not fun.

The next time you have a great-looking panorama you'd like to show off, use TourWrist, a free iOS app (download link) available in the App Store. Once you sign up and … Read more

Eight fixes the iPhone 5 needs

Three weeks into using the iPhone 5, there's an awful lot I like: the screen, the weight, the speed, and even features like turn-by-turn navigation, which has become my lifeline while moving out to the suburbs with a car. It is, without a doubt, my favorite iPhone. However, there are aspects I'd like to see addressed: Maps is at the top of the list, obviously. But there are also some small features in iOS 6 that could stand to be improved. And, there are some nonsoftware issues as well.

"Better reception or Wi-Fi quality" isn't … Read more
