Instagram updates for iPhone 5 and ditches live filtering

With the debut of Apple's iPhone 5 and its new bigger 4-inch screen, developers had to madly rush to redesign their apps to fit the device. Instagram announced today that its app is now ready for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.

"Instagram version 3.1 is available in the App Store!" the photo sharing app wrote in a tweet. "Updates for iOS 6, iPhone 5, and more. Android 3.1 coming soon."

Version 3.1 shows photos filling the smartphone's full screen and also updates the registration process for new users. The photos … Read more

How to add almost any gift card to Passbook

Do a quick search on Twitter and you'll find many iOS users sending request after request (or in some cases, demand after demand) to retailers, airlines, and merchants for Passbook integration. Passbook is clearly one feature iOS users are eager to use, but the delay in adoption is driving them mad.

Enter Gyft.

Gyft is a gift card app for iOS that allows you to store gift card information in a single, easy-to-access place. Sound familiar?

As TechCrunch pointed out this morning, Gyft received a big update last night, bringing with it the ability to add any gift card … Read more

iOS 6 tip: Change the direction of a Panorama photo

As we've already discussed, the new Panorama feature on iOS 6 for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 is extremely easy to use. But, my biggest issue when first using it was always being forced to go from left to right while taking a photo. This may not be a big deal in most situations, but there are times when being able to pan from right to left would be ideal.

It took me a few times using the new feature before I accidentally discovered you're able to switch the direction by tapping on the … Read more

Hacker: I've ported Google Maps to iOS 6

Google Maps seems to have found its way onto iOS 6 with help from a hacker, though it's not quite ready for its public debut.

Self-proclaimed iOS hacker and engineer Ryan Petrich tweeted yesterday that he was able to coax Google Maps to work on iOS 6 "with a little trickery." Though mum about his methods, he said that he was able to port the iOS 5.1 version of Google's app to run on an iPhone 3GS that had been updated to iOS 6. Petrich also included a short video clip showing Google Maps in actionRead more

5 apps to show off the iPhone 5

So, what's the killer feature of the iPhone 5? Arguably, its speed. Or, is it the screen? A lot of parts of Apple's latest iPhone have been tweaked top to bottom, and the first challenge you might find is picking a few apps that take advantage of the iPhone 5 fully.

I expect many more in the coming days that will really start to bring out the best in the iPhone 5, but here are a few early winners.

Why Apple made the right decision with iOS 6 Maps

Imagine you are Apple CEO Tim Cook. You control the single most profitable phone on the market, the iPhone. You have full control over your mobile OS -- iOS -- and the applications that run on it.

Except that's not actually true. You don't have full control over your mobile OS, because two of your default applications rely heavily on technology and data provided to you by Google, your greatest enemy. I am talking, of course, about YouTube and Google Maps, which have been part of iOS since the very first iPhone.

Removing YouTube is simple enough. Google wanted full control of the YouTube app, … Read more

YouTube to keep serving videos on older version of its app

YouTube fans who don't upgrade their iOS device to the latest version can relax: the company plans to continue supporting the old iPhone app indefinitely, CNET has confirmed.

A representative said the TV-cabinet YouTube app that has been a part of iOS from the beginning will continue to function on the older devices, even as it disappears as a pre-installed app in iOS 6. Users can continue browsing the selection of videos inside the old app, which are free of advertising.

It may not seem like much of a surprise that YouTube will continue supporting the old app, and … Read more

iPhrenzy as consumers finally nab Apple's latest phone

Finally, one of the year's most hyped consumer devices is in the hands of consumers across the globe.

Apple started selling its iPhone 5 smartphone this morning to droves of fans, many of whom waited in long lines -- and even camped out -- in order to be among the first to nab it.

While there were some early reports of dwindling supplies, and preorder delivery dates have been pushed back three to four weeks, lines in front of Apple stores on both U.S. coasts move pretty fast and smiling consumers emerged with their much coveted iPhones in … Read more

iPhone 5 launch-day mania

Friday's CNET Update visits the iPhone fanboys and fangirls:

Six years after the first iPhone, people are still excited and lining up at stores around the globe. The iPhone 5 launched in nine countries Friday morning, and Australia was the first to sell it. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was seventh in line at a store in Australia just to say he was one of the first in the world to get one. (That put him 17 hours ahead of customers in California.)

For today's show I interviewed the loyal Apple fans waiting at the iconic 5th Ave. Apple … Read more

Getting started with Passbook on iOS 6

Passbook is Apple's first foray into something that slightly resembles a mobile payment solution. Passbook is a new app included in iOS 6 that allows merchants to develop Passes to be stored in the user's Passbook.

With the release of iOS 6 only a few hours old, there aren't too many examples of apps that have incorporated Passbook into them, so I used this site to help me make some sample Passes just for this post.

When you launch Passbook for the first time, it will more than likely be empty. There will be a link that … Read more
