Will skinny MacBooks get beefy graphics?

Will Apple put brawny graphics in its upcoming lean laptops? One chip site claims it's not looking good.

A chip-centric site is dropping not-so-subtle hints that some of Apple's upcoming thin laptops may be bereft of a separate graphics chip.

Today, Apple's thinnest laptop line, the MacBook Air, comes with stock Intel graphics silicon, built right into the processor. But that hasn't always been the case. First, a little history.

Gen 1 (early 2008): Intel Core 2 Duo with Intel X3100 graphics. Despite a stunning design, the first Air ran hot, didn't have great battery … Read more

What's the best portable gaming system?

Yes, it's a loaded question, but a necessary one with the PlayStation Vita finally making its U.S. release. There's no denying that platforms like iOS and Android have changed the face of portable gaming forever, but do they provide the best experience?

Just like choosing which home console to buy, this is a decision that needs to be made on a personal level, depending on what exactly your budget and preferences are.

In my opinion, the best "gamer's" games are the ones experienced with actual tactile buttons. While touch gaming might be more accessible and ultimately more affordable, I do believe if you limit yourself to that specific medium, you're missing out on a lot that the world of portable gaming has to offer.

With that said, let's look at the current portable gaming landscape.… Read more

How to use the Chromebook photo editor

The Chromebook photo editor is not a Chrome app, as you might think. It's integrated into the file manager. To use it, launch the file manager by hitting Ctrl+M, then navigate to where your photo is located.

Once you click on the photo you want to edit, two options will appear in the lower right-hand corner--View and Edit and Delete. Click on View and Edit to launch the photo editor.

You can allow Chrome OS to autofix the image or crop it.

You can also change the brightness and contrast, or change the orientation of the image.

Nvidia, Rambus settle patent dispute

Nvidia and Rambus have settled a longstanding patent license dispute.

The agreement covers a "broad range" of chip products offered by Nvidia and settles all outstanding claims, including resolution of past use of Rambus' patented innovations, the companies said. The term of the agreement is five years.

Though neither financial nor technological details were disclosed, the dispute between the two companies has not exactly been private.

In 2008, Rambus sued Nvidia, accusing the graphics chip supplier of violating 17 Rambus-held patents on memory controllers. At that time, Rambus claimed that chipsets, graphics processers, and media communication processors across … Read more

Match your colors with Peacock Color Picker

Web designers and graphic artists know that when it comes to matching colors, guesswork won't do; to ensure a perfect match it only makes sense to use a program built for the task. Peacock Color Picker is not the most user-friendly option we've seen, but it's not a bad choice if you're looking for basic color-picking features.

The program's interface is sleek and attractive at first glance, but upon further exploration it turns out not to be particularly intuitive. The fact that there's no Help file means that users have to spend time playing … Read more

OS X 10.7.3 update causing CUI interface artifacts

Yesterday Apple released OS X 10.7.3, but after updating their systems a few people have noticed some errors.

These include not being able to get networks connected, and some difficulties in connecting to displays, such as intermittent black screens or warnings stating that the connection is not supported.

Most of these errors seem fairly sparsely reported so far, but one that is a bit more widespread is applications crashing followed by graphical artifacts in response to user input in various windows.

More specifically, numerous applications crash, and when OS X displays the crash reporter window containing user input … Read more

Three free Picnik alternatives

Google announced that it is shutting down its photo-editing service, Picnik, much to the dismay of many Picnik users.

Once Picnik closes its doors for good on April 19, Picnik users will be forced to seek out alternative photo-editing tools. There's always the popular free desktop tools like Paint.NET or GIMP, but true alternatives to Picnik are Web-based editors. Here are a few of them to consider:

Photoshop Express Adobe's Photoshop Express has all the basic editing tools like crop, resize, red-eye, as well as more advanced editing features like fill light, sharpen, and exposure. It also … Read more

Next-gen iPhone, iPad could deliver 20 times the graphics power

Owners of upcoming iPhone and iPads could enjoy a boost in graphics power 20 times greater than that offered by current models, according to enthusiast site AppleInsider.

Such a leap in power would come courtesy of new graphics processing units developed by U.K.-based Imagination Technologies, which builds the GPUs for Apple's mobile products.

Announced at CES on Tuesday, Imagination's new PowerVR Series6 GPU core chip family is touted as providing 20 times or more of the performance of the current generation.
