eBay CEO says not sorry company bought (and sold) Skype

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif.--eBay chief executive John Donahoe on Wednesday defended both the decision to buy Skype as well as the company's later move to sell most of its stake in the Web telephony firm.

"It was an acquisition I'm not sorry we made," Donahoe said at the D: All Things Digital conference. "Taking risk is one of the things you have to do in an uncertain Internet (environment)."

eBay, he said, thought Skype could reduce friction by connecting buyers and sellers more directly. "It turns out Skype is a fantastic way … Read more

iPad is hot on eBay, but for how long?

Last week I did the unthinkable. I sold my iPad on eBay.

Was it a case of buyer's remorse? There was some of that, sure. But more than anything it was due to Apple's returns and exchanges policy, which gives buyers two weeks (instead of the more typical 30 days) to change their mind. And a disappointing full-year outlook didn't help matters. As BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis observed, "The expectations for a monster quarter are not materializing."

Still, the company did beat the Street in its latest quarter, reporting earnings of 42 … Read more

Why is eBay logo in Whitman ad?

You know when something doesn't seem quite right to you? Like hot pants on a bloodhound? Or the chemical makeup of most human beings who live in Marin County, California?

Something didn't seem quite right to me the other day when I watched the campaign ad that purports to tell you why former eBay CEO Meg Whitman will remove some of the tarnish from the Golden State. (You know, the one that forgets to mention she's a Republican.)

It's not that this ad showed Whitman crunking in a nightclub. Or that it showed her showering admiration … Read more
