One great kitchen mystery is how a watched pot never manages to boil, but there is another, similar puzzle: When will the toast be ready? However, unlike simply not watching, there is no easy remedy to (seemingly) speed along the cooking process. It will be ready when it pops up, and that is that. We are left to wonder on our own, only to be surprised by the toast popping up when we least expect it. Until now.
If you've read anything I've ever posted, you know that I have four children who seem to believe they are entitled to several meals daily, and I am cheap. A favorite breakfast in my house is waffles. Think two per child, per day. Plus sometimes I eat one--or two. So figure that we eat about 50 waffles per week.
I've tried store brands, national brands purchased on sale with coupons, and bulk-size boxes. However, the lowest price I can find is about $1 for 10 waffles, so I'm paying at least $5 per week--often quite a … Read more
Ice cream is a selfish treat. After all, when it comes down to it, other than dogs, babies, and very significant others, nobody wants to share that cone with you anyway. Even if one were so inclined, the issue of flavor would most certainly come up. This is why we have stores dedicated to giving us picky consumers dozens of flavor options. But what of homemade ice cream? If you enjoy making ice cream at home, somebody has to decide what flavor to make. Most ice cream machines can only handle one flavor at a time, so somebody has to … Read more
A food processor is a fun kitchen tool to own. Once you dive into creating a meal with one, you never want to go back. They chop, slice, shred, and mix easily and at the touch of a button. As a kitchen task time-saver, food processors offer top-notch execution. It seems that with many tools designed to cut down on tedious tasks, overall quality often suffers. Not so with food processors. In fact, they keep improving.
I'm on a coffee kick. Of course, that's not saying much as I am usually on a coffee kick, and have been for a very long time. I, like many others, watched the country as people were introduced to what good coffee was. No longer did we have to suffer the mugs of cheap, flavorless corner store brew. Suddenly, there were half-decent options everywhere. Luckily, not only did coffee improve, but also coffee making. So in addition to being treated to more delicious options, there are also better ways to make coffee--and more specifically, keep it warm.

Making coffee is never an easy task to focus on early in the day. For some, myself included, mornings are a miserable mess until coffee has been introduced into the equation. The problem is that sometimes it can be difficult even to get to that point. Luckily, some smart folks got to thinking and integrated a timer into a coffeemaker. This one innovation certainly makes life easier for those of us who don't function well without the magical elixir.
The Cuisinart Coffee on Demand 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker offers the convenience needed by morning-challenged coffee lovers. With 24-hour programmability and … Read more
In a perfect world, every house would have a fire perpetually burning with a huge spit of roasted meat gently turning. The aroma alone would be enough to convince me that I had found paradise. Assuming, of course, that I would actually be able to eat said meal, and this wasn't some ironic "Twilight Zone"-inspired alternate universe. Eternally rotating fire-roasted slabs of meat will have to wait for most of us, but there is another option to bring home an appliance that at least captures the spirit of warmth, comfort, and the fire pit.
Ice cream is one of those craveable foods. When the need hits, it hits hard, and for those struck by this affliction, the only cure happens to be the same subject that caused it in the first place: ice cream. The desire can present itself any time of the day or night. Faced with an empty freezer, the only solution therefore is to go to the store. Stores that are open around the clock may be abundant, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will have the flavor that you want. A secondary choice may be selected, but it might … Read more
My husband loves to tell the story of how his mother blew up their kitchen with her pressure cooker many years ago. It's apparently the kind of story that's amusing when no one is maimed. But you can understand why I might not have wanted to welcome such an appliance into my own kitchen. I prefer to stick with things that don't blow up.
These days, though, there's a tendency to get back to basics. We're making more of our own food, and it turns out the pressure cooker was once popular for a reason: … Read more
The scent of a freshly baked loaf of bread might possibly be the best smell ever. Sure, a case could be made for chocolate chip cookies or a sizzling pan of bacon, but when it comes down to instinct, nothing beats a hot loaf of bread. It's probably even in our DNA. Thousands of years of mastering the cultivation of wheat has led us to the point that we can now simply push a few buttons and have fresh baked bread in our homes. After assembling the ingredients first, that is. I still haven't seen a home-delivery service … Read more
