Apple has been an LTE straggler -- maybe that's a good thing

Apple has taken a wait-and-see approach to 4G LTE, and that may pay off for the iPhone 5.

While LTE on Verizon's network has become a standard offering for Android phones over the last year or so, Apple CEO Tim Cook has resisted -- until Wednesday.

Cook always said pretty much the same thing: iPhone-use LTE chipsets aren't good enough yet for Apple.

And he had a point. Previous generations of LTE tech had power-consumption and chip-integration tradeoffs. Plus, Verizon's build-out of LTE has been steady but slow. (It just reached an area near my stomping grounds, … Read more

iPhone 5 may need third antenna for simultaneous voice-data

The ghost of Apple's iPhone 4 "antennagate" looks to be haunting the iPhone 5.

The reason simultaneous voice and data capability on 4G LTE isn't possible on Sprint and Verizon simply seems to be the new device's hardware.

CNET reported earlier today that the iPhone 5 models for both Verizon and Sprint don't support data-use and voice simultaneously while on 4G LTE networks -- meaning that if users make a voice call, they'll also need to be on Wi-Fi to pull data inside their apps, including the Safari Web browser. AT&T … Read more

Verizon, Sprint: iPhone 5 can't do voice plus data on 4G LTE

It appears that AT&T will still have an edge on rival carriers when it comes to one key iPhone 5 feature.

The models for both Verizon and Sprint won't let you do other data-hungry tasks while making a phone call on 4G LTE networks. When you're making a voice call on either of the two networks, you'll need to be on Wi-Fi if you want to pull data inside apps, including the Safari Web browser.

"The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while … Read more

Sprint's Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE does Android for novices

Today, Sprint and Samsung trotted out the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE, a phone it's billing as a stepping stone for smartphone first-timers.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device features faster data speeds, a 4-inch display, and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. There's also a 5-megapixel camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and Sprint ID, which lets you load entire profiles based around a theme.

NFC is on here, and Google Wallet will be ready to go for those seeking an opportunity to pay for products with a tap, assuming they're eligible to tie it … Read more

iPhone 5 to restore Apple as smartphone leader, says analyst

Apple should regain its spot as the smartphone leader courtesy of the iPhone 5, says J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz.

Unveiled yesterday at Apple's launch event, the new iPhone could surpass the sales of rival handsets such as Samsung's Galaxy S3 for a variety of reasons, according to the analyst.

The new phone is thinner, lighter, and faster than its predecessor, Moskowitz said in an investors note out today. It also throws in a 4-inch screen and support for 4G LTE. But the iPhone 5's design and battery should help it avoid certain problems faced by … Read more

U.K. gets its first 4G network

U.K. network operator Everything Everywhere, which runs the Orange and T-Mobile brands in the UK, has announced the first commercial 4G LTE network across the country.

The company, which will now be known as EE, will launch the service in 16 U.K. cities -- including London, Manchester, and Glasgow -- by the end of the year and will push for 98 percent U.K. coverage by 2014.

While Orange and T-Mobile will remain as two separate operating companies, EE will be reserved for 4G brands and connectivity.

Along with the announcement, the mobile phone giant -- with more … Read more

Sprint preps 100 more cities for LTE rollout

Sprint wants you to know that although it's far behind AT&T and especially Verizon in deploying its 4G LTE network, the carrier is hard at work.

This morning, Sprint announced its plan to roll out LTE in over 100 more cities "in the coming months" where it currently offers 3G coverage -- including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., and cities in Puerto Rico.

You'll likely see LTE service pop up before the official launch, but Sprint warns that service may not be as fast or as reliable during the pre-launch … Read more

Apple's next iPhone to sport 4G LTE tech, report says

Apple's next iPhone will sport speedier fourth-generation wireless networking, according to a report.

Citing "people familiar with the matter," the Wall Street Journal says Apple's next iPhone will work with some but not all 4G LTE networks in the U.S. and other countries when it's released.

AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have 4G LTE networks in the U.S. These networks offer considerably faster data speeds than 3G networks, though use differing frequencies.

4G LTE technology was largely expected to be included in last year's iPhone model, the iPhone 4S. Apple chose … Read more

Amazon assaults iPad turf with high-end Kindle Fire HD

SANTA MONICA, Calif.-- Perhaps the most unexpected news to come from Amazon's Kindle-fest here today was its announcement of a $499 tablet that runs on the zippy 4G LTE wireless network.

The uber-high end Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE, which also requires a data plan from AT&T that will start at $50 a year, put Amazon squarely into Apple iPad 3 territory. Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos stood on stage at the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica's local airport, making the case that the most expensive Kindle still beats a comparably loaded iPad by more … Read more
