CommunicAsia 2008--expect good things

So soon after the madness that was PC Show 2008 last week, it's now time for the annual CommunicAsia technology fair held at the Singapore Expo. Unlike the PC Show, CommunicAsia is a bona fide tradeshow meant for companies to show off their new products and technologies. Though many things like network and enterprise equipment won't really appeal to ordinary consumers, these are the things that eventually determine what kinds of services you will see from your operators in the near future. Short of showing you pictures of servers and network antennae, here's a brief preview of … Read more

Samsung Instinct to cost $199

Sprint has yet to confirm it officially, but the Samsung Instinct should have a $199 price tag when it goes on sale Friday, June 20. That price includes a rebate but it would require a two-year contract with a Sprint "Simply Everything" plan. We've been hearing buzz of the bargain basement price for a few days now, but Wall Street Journal technology reporter Walt Mossberg mentioned it in his review of the Instinct, which posted today. In all seriousness, a $199 price tag is more than believable as it would make the Instinct just as expensive as … Read more

Photos: Samsung's well-rounded media center

If you aren't one for harsh, unforgiving corners in your living room, you should take a look at the Samsung HT-X715 DVD home media center in a box, which doesn't feature a harsh edge anywhere on its seven-part system. Everything is rounded to within an inch of its life, and we love it.

Not only is everything as well rounded as George Clooney, it's also as pretty as Brad Pitt and as refined as Stephen Fry. The X715 is finished in a subtle reddish tone, designed to match its rose-black TV range. Fortunately it's a discreet … Read more

Steam Quick removes baking messes

It seems as if every oven has some sort of caked-on mess--the buildup from spilled roasts and exploding baking attempts. The typical self-cleaning cycle doesn't do much to remove that gunk either. But who wants to stick their head in the oven and literally chip off that baked-on mess? I know I'm reluctant to go to such measures to clean an oven.

Samsung offers the FTQ386LWX range--say that 10 times fast!--with its Steam Quick feature. Rather than forcing you to break out the elbow grease, ovens with Steam Quick run a light cleaning cycle, meant to … Read more

Apple's Jobs: PA Semi to design iPhone chips

Apple may have taken a look at the future of mobile chip development and decided to forge its own path.

The New York Times scored an interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs following Monday's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, and buried inside a rambling exchange about parallel processing and Mac OS X Snow Leopard was this little nugget about PA Semi, the chip company Apple acquired in April. "PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods," Jobs told the Times.

System-on-chips, or SOCs, are pretty much what they sound like: complete computer systems on a … Read more
