On Call: Bluetooth radiation and unlocked phones

Q: I'm curious as to whether Bluetooth headsets also emit radiation, which could prove harmful to one's health. What can you tell me about this? - Craig

A: Bluetooth headsets do emit radiation, but they do it at a much lower power than a cell phone. In fact, it's so low that it's almost negligible. Keep in mind that while cell phones need to connect to a tower that could be a couple of miles away, a headset has an effective range of just 30 feet. However, if the prospect of Bluetooth radiation really worries you, … Read more

Nokia takes wraps off N96 NAM, N85, and N79

Nokia scored a hat-trick today with the announcement of three new Nokia N series models: the Nokia N96 (North American Edition), the Nokia N85, and the Nokia N79. Keeping with the family, the trio of Symbian smartphones offer high-end multimedia features, such as a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and work with Nokia's Ovi Internet services, which include the N-Gage gaming platform, photo sharing, and Nokia Maps. All handsets are expected to ship in Q4 and will be sold as unlocked phones (you know what that means--save your pennies now because they won't be cheap). Now, let'… Read more

What's with Windows Mobile?: Ask the Editors

Q: I need to replace my Palm Treo 650. Here's what I need. I need the organizing/calendar as well as contacts features. It needs to be a quad-band phone; have a screen similar in size to the Palm 650; a camera so it can record video clips and photos. It also needs to send text messages with photos attached and a QWERTY keyboard.

I'd buy another Treo, but I hear that Windows Mobile 6 works really slowly and is unreliable (at least on the Palms). I've also heard that Treo keyboards tend to die (like mine … Read more

Palm Treo Pro: Not digging it

Underwhelming--that's the word that comes to mind when I look at the new Palm Treo Pro.

Yes, nicer looking for sure, with a strong influence from the lower-cost Centro model (and looking rather like the upcoming BlackBerry Bold). It also has 3G and Wi-Fi, which is great, the newest version of Windows Mobile, and GPS, though these can also be found on existing competitors. So it's got a decent package of features, but what's so compelling about it that isn't offered elsewhere?

In this day and age, offering a screen that takes up less than 50 … Read more

Daily Debrief: Possible fall pizzazz from Palm

In the early days of smartphones, Palm was the leader in the market. That was then. The now is decidedly less exciting for the company that seems to lag way behind other manufacturers when it comes to advanced mobile technology and, let's face it, the cool factor. How many of you have come to regard the Treo as a clunky piece of hardware that you sheepishly pull out in front of your friends who drag and pinch their sleek, shiny touch screens as they browse the Web, flip through their music albums, and show off their photos? Yeah, can … Read more

Palm Treo Pro officially announced

While not the best-kept secret in the technology world, what with all the leaked photos and videos, we're still aflutter over Palm's official unveiling of the Palm Treo Pro Wednesday. And why wouldn't we be? The smartphone is looking pretty sharp, both inside and out.

The first thing you might notice is the new modern look. The Treo Pro sheds the outdated, clunky design of previous Treos and trades it in for a sleeker design (4.4 inches high by 2.3 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep; 4.7 ounces) and nice black casing. It … Read more

Windows Mobile 6.1 update released for Motorola Q9h

Attention all Motorola Q9h owners: Motorola has released an official Windows Mobile 6.1 update that you can download for free from the company's Web site.

The upgrade obviously brings the latest version of the mobile operating system to the AT&T smartphone, as well as promise of improved performance and speed. As with all updates, be sure to back up all your data since the process will wipe your device.

Daily Debrief: November debut for HTC's Android-platform phone

To be clear, Google is not making any cell phone hardware, but rather, an operating system called Android that will be compatible with a number of manufacturers and carriers. The FCC has just green-lighted handset-maker HTC for a November release of a phone model that they're calling the "Dream."

The idea of this phone has piqued a lot of consumer interest among fans of Google's other products: search, e-mail, docs, you name it. As Krazit explains, don't expect this phone to be a true rival to Apple's iPhone, but rather a midrange, entry-level phone … Read more

Palm Treo Pro plays peekaboo

Heeeeyyyy, remember those sexy pictures we saw of a rumored Palm Treo 850 a while back? Well, it looks like they're resurfacing again, but this time in an internal Palm presentation that, oopsies, briefly appeared on the company's Web site. The slides have since been taken down but they were up long enough for SlashGear to get some screen shots.

If this presentation is legit, it appears the smartphone will actually be called the Palm Treo Pro and will run Windows Mobile 6.1. The sleek-looking device (I'm really digging the design) will also reportedly have 3G … Read more

BlackBerry Javelin plays little brother to Bold

When it comes to smartphones and cell phones, one size does not fit all. So while it might seem like everyone wants the BlackBerry Bold, Research In Motion knows better. Enter the RIM BlackBerry Javelin. This rumored smartphone is like the little brother to the Bold. It drops the HSDPA support but offers EDGE, Wi-Fi, and GPS.

The Javelin is also said to have a 512MHz processor and 256MB of flash memory under the hood, while rocking a 480x360-pixel resolution display like the Bold. Some say the Javelin is in line to replace the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8320 in T-Mobile'… Read more
