Debunking a law firm's open-source FUD

Update below with White & Case's response. Spoiler: they weren't happy with my interpretation of their e-mail.

White & Case, a leading international law firm, has been struggling in the face of the recession, laying off 70 associates in late 2008.

Perhaps nothing makes its struggle as clear as its attempt to drum up business by scaring prospective and current clientele into retaining its services to address the very scary open-source legal threat, as a recent e-mail sent out to a friend suggests:

Eastpak: Optical discs are totally the new MP3s

Believe it or not, party photographs are good for something: the guys over at Coolcats spotted this Eastpak CD case in the wild, and it appears to be part of the company's product collaboration with Ed Banger Records, the French label behind recently popular acts Justice, Busy P., and SebastiAn.

The entire collection will drop this fall, but High Snobiety already gave us a look at some of the first pieces in the official collabo--a backpack and a few smaller luggage items that bear bright, colorful Ed Banger allover-print themes.

The CD case is a little strange to me, … Read more

The DIY droid you're drooling for

You know what's cool? Modding your computer case. What's cooler than cool? Modding your computer case to look like R2-D2. Yeah, that's right. A real life-size R2-D2.

Frenk Janse, the creator of this mod, used a trash can that was on its way to the recycle bin, plus pictures off the Internet and a bit of know-how and creativity to work this little guy out.

And it doesn't just sit there, either. This droid includes fans and a Webcam, and even beeps and buzzes out of speakers Janse attached to the legs.

The best part? The … Read more

EC ends full-time antitrust monitoring of Microsoft

The European Commission has said it will stop actively monitoring Microsoft to check that the software maker is complying with a 2004 antitrust ruling.

In 2005, the Commission appointed an independent trustee to assess whether Microsoft was supplying interoperability information for Windows with workgroup servers to software rivals. The Commission told CNET News sister site ZDNet UK on Wednesday that it will no longer require a full-time monitor, and that it will use "ad hoc assistance" to provide it with advice on any issues arising from the ruling.

Gallery: iLuv announces affordable iPod accessories for 2009

Rarely do technology product titles or company names give me warm, fuzzy feelings, but there's something about iLuv that makes me smile. The accessories-maker's moniker is just so...optimistic. Also pleasing is the company's latest line of iPod-friendly extras, none of which costs more than $29.99. What can I say? I'm a sucker for colorful MP3 player trimmings that won't break the bank. But rather than drone on about the specs here, I've thrown together a gallery so you can take a closer look.

Vyatta beats out Cisco with a free download

It's said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Vyatta, an open-source competitor to Cisco and Juniper, has now taken of several recent steps toward commodifying the existing networking software market, including a deal with the New Mexico Court System.

The No. 1 reason we went with Vyatta was the flexibility and the peace of mind, knowing that if … Read more

Kindle 2 doesn't ship with protective cover, memory expansion slot

OK, I have to admit I initially missed these small--but potentially serious--omissions from the Amazon Kindle 2. But I just read the fine print in the specs and the new model doesn't ship with a protective cover or the memory expansion slot found on the original Kindle.

Many Kindle owners have complained about how mediocre the cover that shipped with the original Kindle was, but I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed to learn that the device arrive completely naked this go around. And while 2GB is ample for books and other digital print matter, … Read more

Even Aquaman wouldn't be caught dead with this iPhone case

While everyone else is pulling out their hair trying to make the slimmest iPhone case possible, the geniuses over at Fins 4 Fun are going in the complete opposite direction with their swim fin-shaped cell phone holster. If you just can't get enough negative attention, this holster's gonna pull you out of your rut, one earful of sand at a time.

The fin isn't quite as big as an adult swimming fin, but it's just large enough to make you look like a total loser. And just so you know they're not completely joking with the design, the "heel strap" is adjustable to fit all the latest smartphones, as well as other small items like MP3 players and digital cameras. Heck, you can even put a pack of Altoids in there, as long as the dimensions don't exceed 2 inches wide by 4.75 inches high and .75 inches deep.

Buyers will appreciate the disclaimer on the Fins 4 Fun Web site that reads: "WARNING: This product may attract a lot of attention! Celebrate good times." Understatement of the year. I don't know about you guys, but the first person I see using this little guy is going to get an ice cream cone on their head, courtesy of one Justin Yu--maybe they should add that to the warning. The Fin holster is available now for $19.99.
