ObjectSupportLib and Mac OS 8: a follow-up

Partially contrary to the statement in the draft of the Mac OS 8 Technote ( as reported last time) that Mac OS 8 has moved ObjectSupportLib to the System file, Peter Hillstones found that a version of OSL was installed in his Extensions folder by the OS 8 Installer (the Get Info window showed that it came from "Internet Access 1.0"). Meanwhile, the MRP reports that (again contrary to the Technote), The Installer will not move older copies of OSL out of the Extensions folder. Clearly there is still some confusion here.

Fixing an HP 550C/560C printing problem with 600 series software

Will Mardis writes that he tried installing the DeskWriter 600-series drivers on his DeskWriter 550C/560C printers - in hope that it might somehow solve crashing problems he was having when printing certain documents (particularly from Word 6.0.1 documents with colored revision marks and PowerPoint 3.0 presentations with pasted graphics).

"Although I was unable to make the 600 drivers work with the 550C, in the process I "inadvertently" updated the HP Background and HP PrintMonitor files to versions 4.0.7 and 3.0.8, respectively. Saving these files and deleting the others (i.… Read more

Views on using third party formatting and SCSI software with Jaz/Zip drives: a follow-up

Following up on a previous posting here at MacFixIt, Larry Melkus writes that FWB and La Cie told him that they know of no problems with their formatting software (HDT and Silverlining) on Jaz cartridges. However, Iomega posted the following additional explanation of their position:

"I strongly recommend you do not use FWB with our drives. You are literally playing Russian Roulette with your data. FWB (HDT) is a known conflict with our software. While it is a fine program, it keeps trying to take control of our drive and operate it. Our drives are made to be very … Read more

Odds & Ends

LaserWriter 8.4.3 posted LaserWriter 8.4.3 [1168Kb] is included as part of Mac OS 8. However, you can now also download it separately for use in Mac OS 7. According to its Read Me file, the major new feature is that it allows QuickDraw GX applications to print in the standard non-GX environment (needed now that GX printing is no longer supported in Mac OS 8).

FileSaver conflicts with new Mac OS 8 utilities?

Vince Loden writes that on both his Power Mac 7200/120 and his Power Mac 8500/180, "I've found that if the Prevention Preferences of Norton Utilities' FileSaver (in versions 3.5.0 and 3.5.1) are set for a QuickScan at startup, the machine hangs during the scan." According to a posting he spotted in Symantec's discussion groups, this appears to be caused by the CMM Plug-Ins 1.1 or CMTools 1.0 Contextual Menu utilities.
