A watch with a built-in slot machine

As the poker craze has turned suburban enclaves into dens of gambling iniquity, other traditional games of chance have suffered--namely, the slot machine. But Girard-Perragaux isn't so easily swayed by the latest trends (particularly American ones), and the Swiss watchmaker has proven that point with its "Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon," which pays homage to the one-armed bandit.

In addition to the usual crown, the right side of the case has a small handle that can be pulled to set the reels in motion, Luxist says. (Three bells in a row denotes a jackpot, FYI.) The unique 18k … Read more

Video watch gets a 'big' screen

The makers of a video wristwatch we cited awhile back are apparently benevolent types who don't want us to go blind squinting at a 1.5-inch screen. So Chinavasion has come out with a new model that ups the size of its color LCD to a whopping 1.8 inches.

As Technabob notes, it's impossible to call this a widescreen display with a straight face, but it does claim a full 16:9 ratio for MP4 viewing, as well as MP3 playback and an FM radio. (Whether it actually tells time is unclear.)

We're not sure how … Read more

The latest watch from TokyoFlash: the 'Jive Turkey.' Yes, that's Jive Turkey

I read recently on Technabob that the latest watch from TokyoFlash's edgy PIMP line, also known for the Pleasure Seeker, was called the "Jive Turkey." What? I had never heard this term in my life before, and was wondering if some folks at TokyoFlash had been dabbling in illicit substances. Clearly, I'm just not up to date on my vintage pop culture.

According to Urban Dictionary, however, "jive turkey" is an old '70s term for someone who isn't particularly good at BSing but does it anyway. So, maybe this watch just pretends to … Read more

Watches for (wealthy) F1 fans

High-end watchmaker Tag Heuer showed off its redesigned F1-themed watch at the Basel World watch show recently. The Tag Heuer Formula 1 comes with an orange, red, silver, or black dial in its chronograph version. The standard watch version has a black, red, or white dial. Luminescent numbers let you see the time during night driving, and it's water-resistant to 200 meters for, well, if you go plunging into the ocean during a fast drive along the Cote D'Azur. If you're not into F1 racing, Tag Heuer assures that the watch is also good for mountain biking, … Read more

This watch is telling you that it's 5 AM and time to leave the party

A couple of us Cravers love to highlight the brightest, flashiest, and most obnoxious in raver chic gadgetry, from ice cream trucks to keyboards. Here's another one for you, as seen on Technabob. These straight-outta-Japan watches from ODM Design have an "electroluminescent display that wraps around the curvature of the watch band." Apparently U.S. residents can find them on eBay for between $80 and $90. I haven't seen any photos to show how big these actually are on wrists, but I assume they could look pretty cool if they aren't too obnoxiously big and … Read more

'Titanic DNA Watch' lives up to its name

We never saw Titanic, mostly because of Leonardo DiCaprio and that blasted song by Celine Dion. But we'd still be more than happy to wear the "Titanic DNA Watch"--which was designed to commemorate the ship, not the movie--so named because it is made with traces of steel and other materials from the shipwreck.

Gizmodo (which hasn't seen the movie either) notes that coal from the vessel is contained in the lacquer used to paint the watch's black dial. Swiss watchmaker Romain Jermone says the number of timepieces to be released, at a price that … Read more

'Body Watch' delivers the ugly truth

Sometimes, a gadget can be too smart for its own good. That's our opinion, anyway, about an unforgiving fitness device called the "Body Watch."

Why? Because this little sadist will unflinchingly deliver unwelcome news about the state of your physical condition--complete with body fat, body water and body mass--all in real time . And if you try to blame the results on mechanical error, be aware that the watch uses "bio-electrical impedance analysis" and "strain gauge precision technology" to determine the effects of all those Krispy Kremes, according to OhGizmo.

On the flip side, … Read more

Another watch for Felipe Massa

Richard Mille is to watches what Frank Buchwald is becoming to lamps.

His latest functional art masterpiece is the RM011 Flyback Chronograph, a descendent of the RM 09 developed for F1 driver Felipe Massa, created with Formula 1 racing in mind. And with an estimated price between $60,000 and $80,000, it will fit right in with your pricey F1 mouse mats and Ferrari cell phone.

Gear Live and Watchismo seem to have got the scoop on the RM011 watch, which was officially due for unveiling later in March, according to Kronos Blog.

Initial hands-on with Netflix Watch Now

Back in January, we reported on Netflix's new movie streaming service, dubbed Watch Now, but we weren't able to try it out because the "Watch Now" tab never showed up on our account page. Well, thanks to a quick tip from Uneasy Silence (via Gizmodo), we were able to get the Watch Now tab added to our account and take it for a test spin. Well, it wasn't quite that easy. We got the Watch Now tab added to our account without a problem, but were quickly rebuked when it detected we weren't using … Read more

Tell time just like Jack Bauer

Now you too can be as cool as Jack Bauer (though you'll have to lose the Lightsaber first, sorry). The "MTM BlackHawk" that co-stars with him on 24 is available for civilian purchase from U.K.-based Special Ops Watches. So what do you get for $645? Tech Digest says it has an "internal lighting mode" for viewing in the dark and an orange "external lighting mode" that can be seen for more than a mile in times of distress. Yes, it sounds a bit pricey to us as well for what you … Read more
