Samsung and InterDigital reach 3G and 2G settlement
Samsung and wireless technology provider InterDigital have reached a settlement in their long-running patent dispute involving 3G and 2G technologies, InterDigital announced Monday.
Under the agreement, Samsung will receive a royalty-bearing license to cover all of its 3G products through 2012. The agreement, which also resolves a dispute over Samsung's royalty obligations for its 2G sales, will also include products built on WCDMA and cdma2000 standards and related extensions.
The parties did not disclose the terms of the agreement, however, a report in the Wall Street Journal cites a telecom analyst who puts a value of $400 million to $… Read more

Samsung Renown reviewed
After three touch-screen phones in a row, it's nice to see a Samsung phone that doesn't try to hard to make a statement.
The new Samsung Renown (aka the SCH-U810) for Verizon Wireless is one such device; it has a standard flip-phone design that Samsung has become...wait for it...renowned for and its midrange feature set is what you'd expect from a Verizon 3G phone.
The chocolate color scheme is unique, and the Renown features dual-mode CDMA/GSM support, but ultimately, there's not much to distinguish the Renown from other phones in its class. Performance … Read more
We weigh in on the Samsung Gravity
The Samsung Gravity dropped our way this week, and we had a chance to put it through its paces.
As we referenced in an earlier blog post, the Gravity reminds us a lot of the Samsung Rant, and even more so of the LG Rumor. Indeed, it even has a similar feature set to the Rumor. Like those other phones, the Gravity has a candy bar shape when closed, but has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easier texting. It doesn't have 3G or GPS, but it does have a pretty basic music player and the camera takes OK photos. … Read more
Samsung starts mass production of 256GB SSDs
The main things keeping solid-state drives out of the mainstream are their high costs and low capacities. Currently, 128GB SSDs sell for around $400, far more expensive than comparable traditional mechanical drives while still holding less data.
Samsung's aiming to fix that with its new 256GB SSD, which it's just put into mass production. The storage size is close to being on par with current laptop hard drives, and by producing them in mass quantities it should be able to bring the price down dramatically. Currently, Axiom 256GB SSDs can go for as much as $7,500, really … Read more
