Yet another astro-gadget: the Aurora Borealis simulator

Recently we've been digging astronomy gadgets around these parts (and astro-mashups on Webware). Most of the time, they deal with plain old stargazing or the simulation thereof. This Japanese import, however, deals with recreating the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) on your wall, ceiling, or projector screen of choice.

The gadget in question is a 6-inch-tall lamp, retailing for the Japanese equivalent of slightly over $60, which runs on AA batteries and even comes with a sleep timer so that you can use it as a sort of visual lullaby. It obviously isn't an exact scientific reproduction, but for … Read more

Sony's rainbow laptops get spring fever

Perhaps inspired by the success of PlayStation 3s done in custom colors, Sony seems increasingly emboldened in taking the paintbrush to its various products. The latest evidence of this flowering can be found in the spring line of its Vaio C series laptops, following its fall colors of last year.

The newest of its limited "Graphic Splash" editions available in "Charcoal Blossom, Black and White Dot, Weathered Blue, or Brown and Turquoise Dot," Engadget says. As for the specs, if you care, the laptops sport an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB or more of memory … Read more

How to tell whether you've been hit, or just wet yourself...in the dark

Blood may be thicker than water, but unfortunately they're both the same color if you're wearing night vision goggles.

The world of night vision has come a long way since the clunky, Vietnam-era starlight scopes, but it's still a monochromatic green. Tenebraex Corp. aims to fix that with a night vision filter that tricks your brain into seeing objects in different colors, The Boston Globe reported.

The ColorPath (Color Capable Night Vision Device) is mechanical, not computer based, which makes it more temperature resistant, light weight and power frugal, according to the manufacturer.

The ability to see … Read more

Morphing mood lighting? Sure, I'm game

If you have a mean landlord who doesn't let you paint anything in your house or apartment, this could be a solution to your lack-of-color woes. The Morpheus Ambient Lighting Modules use really, really, really, really high-end LEDs to mix a combination of red, green, and blue light. Then it projects it on white walls--sorry, I'm not sure how it would be distorted by that lovely eggshell or alabaster color you've got in your living room.

It'll cost you the Brit equivalent of $167.

Basically, it's the ultimate haute end of color-changey gadgets. Because here'… Read more

A pink Zune, now? So 2006

It's become standard practice in the consumer electronics industry: When it doubt, paint it pink. But strategies like that usually work best when a color is still hot, or at least lukewarm.

Perhaps that explains why Microsoft--rarely accused of setting trends these days--is coming out with a pink Zune now. Cliczune says EBgames.com has confirmed that the pastel version of the media player will be available May 1 for $250 with the standard 30GB storage capacity.

We doubt that the new hue will propel the Zune over the iPod anytime soon, but there was a fair amount of … Read more

Koloroo KolorWheel makes your iPod a color-scheme mastermind

For the nonartistic, color theory is hard to grasp. Each color, hue, shade, and tone has its own complementing and clashing colors. Put complementary colors with each other, and you have a pleasantly fashionable apartment/ensemble/desktop scheme. Put clashing colors together, and people will think you're colorblind.

Now you can keep all those different colors together on your iPod. Gizmodo reported on the Koloroo KolorWheel, an iPod widget that turns your iPod into a color wheel. Spinning the iPod Click Wheel cycles through the color wheel, so you can see exactly how any shade of any color looks … Read more

Wii gets a suit of armor in chrome

What's a sure sign that a gadget has finally arrived? When you start to see versions of it in chrome.

The Wii has graduated from standard colors to the hard stuff: the chrome "I-Case." XCM Live is taking pre-orders for the shiny console case mod for $38, according to Technabob.

Considering how much color PlayStation 3s have gone for on eBay, that's a relative bargain.

Do you crave more illuminated party decorations?

Imagine if you had one of these in your yard. It's a floating fountain that you can place in your decorative pond of choice (provided it has at least a foot of water in it) and it'll create an array of water that's 10 feet in diameter. Plus, it's illuminated by 42 LEDs that make it an awfully pretty sight. There's even a sensor that will make sure that the lights are only on when it's dark out. Sure, it costs $850, but that's a small price to pay for such coolness. (Right?)… Read more

Candy-colored copiers

Panasonic apparently has an equal-opportunity paintbrush when it comes to equipment. Following the trend of neon appliances in the home, from refrigerators to washing machines, the company is applying its pallette to the color-barren workplace.

Its new line of C3 multi-functional copy machines come in such non-traditional office hues bright red, yellow and blue. We applaud the effort because, as I4U News notes, research shows that colors are generally good for productivity and morale at work.

However, we must say that doesn't hold a candle to Konica Minolta's psychedelic copier-DVD-latte machine--either in function or in hallucinogenic design.… Read more

Shocker: Men like black phones

Now that the Mayo Clinic has settled the question of cell phone safety in hospitals, it's time to turn our attention to research that really matters: What colors do men and women like?

A study commissioned by phone retailer MPhone has surmised that both genders generally like the same models but want different colors. (Stop the presses!) The report also contained the blockbuster finding that "men were twice as likely to buy black phones," according to Gadgets Weblog.

And how reliable is this research? Consider this statement from an MPhone rep: "While we know who is … Read more
