Android 1.6 highlights

Google released the latest Android software development kit this week so that developers could begin to test their applications for the looming Android 1.6 update. End users can expect to see the update as early as next month, but I went ahead and loaded an early version on my phone to preview the latest changes.

Possibly the most notable update is the new quick search box, which includes a redesigned search framework to make finding things on your phone easier than ever before. Users can search through apps, contacts, browser history, music, the Web, and more. The quick search … Read more

On Thursday, Samsung introduced the newest addition to its Omnia smartphone series: the Samsung Omnia Pro B7330. In addition, the company revealed that all of its Omnia models will run Windows Mobile 6.5 and it will release upgrades to current products on the market now.

The Omnia Pro B7330 is expected to ship in October and is designed for the mobile professional. It features a slate design with a full QWERTY keyboard and 2.62-inch QVGA nontouch display. Sprint HTC Hero reviewed

Sprint was one of the first carriers to join the Open Handset Alliance when it was founded in November 2007 to promote Google Android. However, unlike T-Mobile, which released the T-Mobile G1 and the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, the carrier wasn't so quick to offer an Android handset to its customers because it simply didn't think the operating system was "good enough"; that is, until now.

Starting on October 11, Sprint will offer its first Android device, the HTC Hero, for $179.99 with a two-year contract and unlimited data plan. We've actually had a few … Read more

LG enters Android fray with GW620

On Monday, LG Electronics introduced its first Google Android handset, the LG GW620, which is set to hit select European markets in Q4 2009. The Korean consumer electronics company wasn't too forthcoming with device details, but we do know that the smartphone features a 3-inch touch screen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

It seems social networking will also play a prominent role, and LG said the GW620 will live up to the company's philosophy of making the "smartphone experience more accessible for typical users." Perhaps that means LG will add its S Class user interface (a … Read more

Get a Palm Pre for $99.99 shipped

iPhones are great, but they're not for everybody. If you're looking for the next best thing from a carrier other than AT&T, I recommend the Palm Pre. Though Palm recently cut the price to $149.99, Wirefly has the Pre for just $99.99 shipped.

That's for new Sprint customers and with a two-year service agreement, of course. (If you're already a Sprint customer, you can get the Pre for $139.99 with a two-year contract extension.)

I'm not going to run down the Pre's features and all that; you can watch … Read more

Beware of pricier mobile Internet data plans

Prices for cell phone voice services may be dropping, but consumers are likely to be forced to pay a lot more for mobile Internet data plans in the future.

It's no secret that the price of voice services for cell phones is falling. Just last week Sprint Nextel announced it was offering a new $69.99 a month, Any Mobile, Anytime plan that allows subscribers to call any cell phone in the U.S., regardless of the carrier, in addition to such things as unlimited text messaging and data services.

Analysts are predicting a price war in the mobile … Read more

First impressions: Motorola Cliq

It was a big day for Motorola. The handset manufacturer unveiled its first Google Android device, the Motorola Cliq, to a packed house at the Mobilize '09 conference in San Francisco. While much of the interest was in seeing Moto's premier Android handset, many were also curious to see if it would deliver something that would breathe new life into a company struggling behind the competition.

Is the Motorola Cliq the answer? Well, we're not completely sold at this point. We finally got some hands-on time with the device, and while we're impressed with the hardware and … Read more

The Cliq: Motorola's first Android phone

On Thursday morning, Motorola officially introduced its first Google Android device: the Motorola Cliq. The announcement was made by Motorola's co-CEO Sanjay Jha at the Mobilize 09 conference here in San Francisco, who was later joined by Cole Brodman, T-Mobile's chief technology and information officer, to show off the Cliq.

Long-rumored as the Morrison, the Motorola Cliq will be available from T-Mobile later this fall, just in time for the holidays, but pricing was not revealed during its introduction. T-Mobile will offer the phone in two colors: titanium or winter white, and it will be sold worldwide in … Read more

Verizon to offer HTC Touch Pro2 for $200

On Thursday, Verizon Wireless introduced its latest smartphone to the world, the HTC Touch Pro2. However, it's not so much the product announcement that's newsworthy, but rather the price.

Verizon will offer the Windows Mobile smartphone for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate, which is a way better than some of its competitors (cough, T-Mobile, Sprint, cough, cough) which charge $349.99 for the same device.

Verizon doesn't cut back on the features either. The Touch Pro2 offers dual-mode functionality for world-roaming capabilities, Wi-Fi (yay!), Bluetooth, and GPS. In addition, like … Read more

iPhone users aren't the only ones to get cool apps

The long-awaited flood of Google Android devices is about to hit the market, which should help bring more cool applications to new Android phones.

Motorola will be the next big manufacturer to announce its Android phone. The company plans to formally unveil it at an event on Thursday in San Francisco. Motorola has already been reaching out to developers to get them on board to create new applications that it hopes will drive demand for the new phones.

Mobile applications for smartphones are hot. The fact that Apple's App Store has had more than 1 billion downloads after only … Read more
