Gadget lifestyles: iPod dock is into leather

Lately, it seems that more tech products are getting into leather (or some synthetic version thereof), even if they're not even available yet. The most recent example is the Audio Pro Porto seen on Chip Chick.

There are countless iPod docks and speakers on the market, of course, but this one tries to distinguish itself with a vertical design and casing that allows it to be more portable than other home systems. The leather (or leather-looking) exterior has a nicely stiched handle on top so you can make it into upright boombox as long as your triceps don't … Read more

iPod remote for when you're on the go--inside your house

DLO has announced its new HomeDock Music Remote for the iPod. It's a wireless solution for controlling your iPod from anywhere in your house or apartment. Your iPod simply rests in a dock, which doubles as a charger, and is connected to your home stereo. With the included OLED remote, you can navigate through all of the artists on your iPod or even create a playlist of your own. Adding even more functionality to the dock, it's also equipped with a USB port, allowing you to sync your iPod with iTunes.

Like other remote-controlled players, the HomeDock uses … Read more

A place for your iPod to take a nap

Now this is what we like--truth in advertising. Or truth in blogging, at least.

Apparently as weary of iPod docks as we are, Uber-Review is spot-on in its assessment of this accessory in saying it does "absolutely nothing." OK, it does let your iPod rest in a little red hammock while it recharges. But that's about it.

Even its German manufacturer seems to acknowledge its limited existence, having given it a suitably superficial name: the "Load Thing." Still, if there's one thing we appreciate as much as honesty, it's a low price. So … Read more

Plug your iPod directly into the desk

You know those 3-inch-wide holes that are a staple in every office desk these days? Yes, the ones you cover up with tchotchkes and stuff because they're ugly and often useless. Well, Belkin has figured out an ingeniously simple use for them: the "In-Desk Dock." As its name implies, the dock plugs right into the hole for instant installation, according to Gear Live. Even we can handle that.

Sony bows to iPod once again

Being late to the game has become a hallmark for Sony, especially where portable media players are concerned--a particularly humiliating legacy, given its Walkman empire of decades past. After finally acknowledging the existence of the iPod with its first dock made for the player recently, Sony is coming out with a version that works with its Bravia line of entertainment systems. The "Digital Media Port iPod DockTDM-IP1" (whew), according to iLounge, can be pre-ordered for $100. So the dock is late and expensive, considering that it's essentially just an adapter. On the flip side, at least you … Read more

Fireplace warms the cockles of your iPod

And you thought the iPod bed was weird. The collision of two consumer technology trends--iPod docks and media furniture--may have seen the ultimate mashup in the iPod fireplace.

Yes, you heard it right. Cal Spas, the purveyor of Marin County-style hot tub culture products, has done it again in offering a musical hearth complete with built-in speakers and iPod docking station. It's not just for looks, either. BornRich reports that this "Home Resort" piece puts out a full 65,000 BTUs.

But, believe it or not, there's some stiff competition. Why confine yourself to … Read more

HP's three cameras and a printer dock

HP just announced several new products at PMA 2007, including three new digital cameras and a new photo printer dock.

The HP PhotoSmart M837 is a compact 7-megapixel, 3X zoom camera with a surprising amount of style. Its slim body and sliding lens cover are more than a little similar to Sony's stylish but much more expensive PowerShot T-series of cameras. The M837 sports a big 3-inch LCD screen that HP claims has a 170-degree viewing angle. The camera also has several image editing features, including a new red-eye reduction mode. The HP PhotoSmart M837 ships in April, with … Read more

iPod dock for the laboratory

Who would have thought that the latest design trend for iPod docks would be tubes? And no, we don't mean the Internet(s).

A few months back we wrote of a vacuum tube docking stereo for music players that had been developed in Japan. Now we see that U.K.-based Roth Audio has a similar idea with its "Music Cocoon" system.

The Roth version doesn't have speakers but does sport the same mad-scientist-lab look of the Japanese version and promises superior quality at its price of 400 pounds, or about $768 (which is a bit … Read more

Scary iPod subwoofer dock will eat you alive

Is good, compact sound important enough to you that you'd opt to buy an iPod sound system that looks like a totally freaky space monster? I mean, I don't really mind it all that much, but there are a few other bloggers at Crave who get pretty paranoid about any kind of gadgets that might be remotely frightening. Consequently, I'm very well aware that some people might not really want this $120-ish iPod dock from iWoofer, even if it has a built-in subwoofer. Because it's scary. Really scary.

Sony finally genuflects before the iPod

It's about time that Sony acknowledged reality. Rather than acting as though it's still king of the hill in entertainment hardware, the proprietary-obsessed company has finally broken down and released an iPod docking station (only a few years late, but no one's really counting anymore).

The speaker station even has the official blessing of Apple, according to Electronista, so compatibility with all iPod models should be ensured. There's just one problem--the price. At $250, this has about as much of a chance of succeeding as the Walkman's transition from CDs to MP3s.
