Ice Cream Sandwich to launch next week

Google is expected to serve up Ice Cream Sandwich--the newest version of Android--on Tuesday at the Samsung Unpacked event in San Diego.

That revelation comes courtesy of the official Android Developers YouTube channel, which earlier today posted a placeholder video titled "Android ICS launch." The site now says, "This live event is no longer available. Sorry about that." Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said last month that the next flavor of the company's mobile operating system would debut sometime in October or November.

Google representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Leaked Galaxy Nexus details point to Verizon exclusivity

The Boy Genius Report has obtained what appears to be a full set of hardware details for the much-anticipated Galaxy Nexus. Formerly known as the Nexus Prime, BGR says the handset will carry both Samsung's Galaxy moniker, as well as the familiar Nexus branding.

If you wondered why Verizon might have passed on the Samsung Galaxy S II this fall, this next bit will clear that up: according to the anonymous source, the Galaxy Nexus will be an exclusive to the carrier when it launches this year. This isn't to say that other wireless providers won't jump … Read more

Samsung's next Android phone looks a lot swoopier

Samsung has posted a teaser video for the new Android phone it plans to debut next week, likely the Nexus Prime. And its design makes the the curved face of the Nexus S look positively flat.

The video for the Samsung Unpacked event on October 11 in San Diego states, "Another perfect combination is just around the corner."

It closes with a side view of the curved phone and the words, "Something big is coming"--perhaps an indication of the phone's screen size.

The video popped up right after Apple debuted its iPhone 4S yesterday. … Read more

Might this be the Nexus Prime?

With but one week to go till Samsung's October 11 event and most likely the unveiling of the Nexus Prime, it makes sense that we'd be seeing more images and details leaking onto the Internet.

Such is the case today as GSMArena has posted what appears to be the first in-the-wild image of the rumored Samsung smartphone.

According to the information listed on the handset's display, the much-anticipated "Pure Google" device will offer a 1,280x720-pixel-resolution HD display. The size of the screen has been calculated to be 4.6 inches--bigger than anything offered in the United States thus far. It's not immediately known whether the screen technology is PenTile matrix; however, the 320dpi pixel density should calm the most savage Android beast.

Looking closely at the bottom row of buttons, we can see that there are no hard keys in sight. This matches up nicely with longtime rumors that the first Ice Cream Sandwich devices would not have any physical buttons, relying on soft keys instead.

As we said, though, we're only a week away from finding out and CNET will be at the event, so be sure to check back next Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. PT for all the juicy details. … Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich video leaked by eBay buyer

Android users may have accidentally gotten their first peek at Ice Cream Sandwich.

A person who bought a Samsung Nexus S smartphone via eBay reportedly discovered that the device was running the upcoming version of the Android operating system instead of the current Android flavor, say the folks at Engadget.

Checking the firmware version numbers, Engadget said the phone seemed to be using the same baseband seen in previously leaked screenshots but had a newer build and kernel.

The buyer shot a two-minute video showing off the phone's interface and features. That video then found its way onto Engadget'… Read more

Samsung to show off Nexus Prime at Oct. 11 event?

The CTIA 2011 fall show is a couple of weeks away, but Samsung has already created a buzz with an invite it sent out last night for an October 11 event in San Diego.

The invitation notes that we'll get to see "what's new from Android," which certainly isn't anything out of the ordinary. Samsung is no stranger to pumping out Android devices. What's interesting to note, however, is that Samsung dubbed the event the "Google Episode," which might lead one to believe that we'll see a pure Google experience phone. … Read more

Google shares how to prep for Ice Cream Sandwich

In the latest sign that the unwrapping of Ice Cream Sandwich is near, Google has clued in developers on how to get their apps ready to take advantage of the upcoming, new flavor of Android.

In a blog post yesterday, Scott Main, lead tech writer for Google's official site for Android developers, reminded readers that Ice Cream Sandwich, or ICS, has been designed to run on anything from small-screen smartphones to big-screen tablets.

But apps designed to run under Android 3.0 Honeycomb are "forward-compatible" and therefore will run on any device with ICS, whether phone or … Read more

Jelly Bean emerges as next version of Android

As Google's Eric Schmidt tells us, we are still weeks, perhaps even months, away from seeing the first devices to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Expected to launch as Android 4.0, the next build of the platform will combine features from both the Gingerbread and Honeycomb builds. Though we wait for official announcements, the rumor mill has already churned out the next release beyond Ice Cream Sandwich. Say hello to Jelly Bean.

According to a source close to This Is My Next, Google has been internally referring to the build as Jelly Bean, however, it's not an … Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich to debut in Oct. or Nov.

Android users waiting for the Ice Cream Sandwich version of the mobile operating system will see the latest flavor pop up sometime in October or November.

Google's own executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, tipped off the time frame for the new version of Android in an interview yesterday with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

Uncovered by Android and Me and other sources, the videotaped interview shows Schmidt specifically saying that "we have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone's really excited about."
