Hurricane Sandy forced T-Mobile to cancel a Holiday Showcase event planned for New York City today, but the storm didn't prevent the carrier from announcing its 2012 product lineup for the holiday season. The iPhone is absent, of course, but T-Mobile will deliver a strong lineup of Android and Windows Phone 8 tablets and smartphones. As you'd expect from the carrier, some devices, like the LG Optimus L9 and Nokia Lumia 810, are decidedly midrange. Windows Phone 8 trio hitting Verizon for the holidays

Microsoft is getting a little cozier with Verizon, saying the nation's biggest carrier will offer three Windows Phone 8 devices for the coming holiday season.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, speaking during an event today, said Verizon will be offering the Nokia Lumia 822, and that the 8X by HTC will ship by Thanksgiving. Verizon also will offer the Samsung ATIV Odyssey in December.

The 8X will retail at $199 for 16 GB, while the Lumia 822 will sell for $99.

T-Mobile beefs up Android security with malware protection

T-Mobile is aiming to fortify the Android smartphones and tablets it carries by offering users free protection against malware and viruses.

The company announced today that it is partnering with mobile security company Lookout to help T-Mobile customers protect their devices with a product called Automatic App Security. The software will come preloaded on certain devices this year, and then T-Mobile will roll it out to most Android devices in 2013.

T-Mobile is the first carrier out of the gate to bring its customers the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 2. As of today, any T-Mobile user can snap up the device.

Rumors floated this week that the carrier was already receiving shipments of the "phablet" in its retail stores. Samsung had planned a Galaxy Note 2 launch event today, but until T-Mobile's announcement it was unclear when exactly users would be able to get their hands on the device.

People may be able to get their hands on Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 "phablet" within a couple of days. According to Phandroid, sources say that T-Mobile will launch the much-anticipated device on Wednesday and that Note 2 shipments have already started arriving in stores.

Samsung has planned a launch event on Wednesday, but it has been unclear what exact date users will be able to pick up the device.

Isis, yet another mobile-payment outfit, to launch trials Oct. 22

Isis, the wireless carrier joint venture created to push mobile payment services, said today that it would launch its trials in Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas, on Oct. 22.

There will be as many as 20 compatible handsets by the end of the year, the company said in an e-mailed statement.

T-Mobile could offer the iPhone in early 2013, says analyst

T-Mobile subscribers may finally get their shot at the iPhone, according to one analyst.

The carrier could "announce official iPhone distribution in early 2013," according to Morgan Stanley analyst Nick Delfas. The analyst provided no further details but said that such a deal would add another one to two million buyers of the iPhone 5 in the first quarter.

With the news of the T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS merger just settling, company shareholders have filed a lawsuit trying to block the deal.

According to the TMONews, MetroPCS shareholders are calling the deal "drastically undervalued" and claiming that MetroPCS' board is "conflicted and serving its own financial interests." The lawsuit was filed in Dallas, Texas against MetroPCS, T-Mobile USA, its German parent company Deutsche Telekom, and MetroPCS' CEO and board of directors.

AT&T announced today that it will be offering the quad-core LG Optimus G starting November 2 for $199.99 after a two-year carrier agreement. Preorders for the 4G LTE device begin tomorrow.

We had a chance to review the device recently, and we have to admit, this device is fast. Its zippy quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU make it a snap to handle, and its 4.7-inch screen is gorgeous. Pictures and videos appeared crisp and bright, and gameplay was vivid and speedy.
