Is the record business headed for oblivion?

I've attended New Music Seminars in NYC before, but this year's event definitely had more passion and spirit. The subheading of this year's festival, "Appetite For Disruption," hinted at the possibilities. The shindig's hub, the old Webster Hall concert venue, hosted nonstop action, and there were more goings-on at 17 clubs and music halls in Manhattan and Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

Guest speakers ran the gamut, from heavyweights like Bob Pittman, CEO of Clear Channel; Lyor Cohen, CEO and chairman of the Warner Music Group; Steve Boom, Amazon's VP for Digital Music; Steve Savoca, head … Read more

Songza app streams tunes that suit your mood

Five o'clock. Quitting time. I'm stressed after a long day of writing. I want to unwind to some mellow tunes, maybe a little acoustic guitar.

Six a.m. Time to hit the treadmill. I need a playlist that'll get my blood pumping and my feet moving. Maybe some progressive house music courtesy of dance community Beatport.

Sunday afternoon by the pool. Let's face it, nothing beats the latest pop hits from the likes of Adele, Katy Perry, and Hot Chelle Rae.

I could build playlists for all these situations, but who's got time for that? … Read more

Spotify brings free music streaming to any Web site or blog

Given all the license restrictions roaming the music industry, few Web site owners are willing to integrate tracks into their pages. But Spotify just made it much easier to do so.

The streaming company today launched the Spotify Play Button, a service that enables Web site owners or bloggers to integrate a song, album, or playlist into their site. Spotify said it will allow Web site owners to embed the player for free and will take care of paying the artists on its own.

"You want to give your fans access to any song, album or playlist of your … Read more

Spotify intros 12 third-party apps for your listening pleasure

Spotify's announcement late last year that it would be offering an application platform for developers seems to be paying off.

The streaming-music company announced today that there are 12 new apps available on its service from a host of companies, including Universal, Sony, Warner, and Def Jam.

For classical music fans, Spotify boasts a new app called Classify that allows users to find songs based on composers, eras, and moods. Def Jam Recordings has unveiled an application designed for hip-hop and R&B fans that will "give you new experiences in music discovery and curation." There'… Read more

Mog rumored to have sold itself to HTC Beats

Subscription music service Mog may have finally found a new owner.

The struggling service has been acquired by HTC's Beats, the smartphone maker's audio technology company, a source told Business Insider. BI's Matt Rosoff cautioned that it was just one source and should be classified at this time as only a rumor.

A Mog representative did not respond to a CNET request for comment and declined to discuss the rumor with BI, saying, "We're always looking for the best opportunity for our business and shareholders, but don't comment on specifics of those conversations. Nothing … Read more

Spotify for iOS now streaming at 320Kbps

There was a time when streaming audio meant sacrificing fidelity. Many early Internet radio stations delivered an AM-quality 64Kbps stream, while the "good ones" topped out at 128Kbps.

Even Spotify for iOS, the app version of the popular music service (which CNET called "the best free music option since stealing"), could muster only 160Kbps--a bit better than FM radio, but a far cry from CD-quality.

My, how times have changed: Spotify for iOS can now stream music at 320Kbps.

That's a big deal for folks who typically listen through headphones, which is where you can … Read more

Record anything on your Mac

Audio Hijack Pro is an affordable audio-recording workhorse for the Mac, capable of capturing audio from applications, devices such as microphones, or any other source that runs through your machine.

Audio Hijack Pro's clean, two-paned, iTunes-like interface focuses on sources that you can capture--which means just about anything, from software to hardware. By default, the left pane includes some of the usual suspects that you might want to record (DVD Player, iChat, iTunes, QuickTime Player, RealPlayer, Safari, Skype, your system audio, and default system input), but you can easily add additional sources, such as other apps or devices.

Rhapsody brings its music to Android tablets

Popular music subscription service Rhapsody today brings its library of tracks to Android tablets running Honeycomb.

While Rhapsody has long been a fixture as a music player on many Android phones and the iPhone, today's newly released app was specifically created for tablets. And different from the iPad app, it's not simply a scaled-up version of its smaller-screen counterpart. According to Chief Product Officer Brendan Benzing, the folks at Rhapsody "re-imagined the entire experience" in order to take advantage of the extra screen real estate of a tablet and the capabilities of the Android Honeycomb OS. … Read more

Get an Altec Lansing InMotion Air wireless speaker for $99.99

Last week I wrote of my love for speaker docks.

You know the only thing better? A wireless speaker, one that lets you stream music right from your smartphone or tablet--no docking required. (Here's a list of CNET's top portable Bluetooth speakers.)

While supplies last, Ben's Outlet has the refurbished Altec Lansing InMotion Air IMW725 wireless speaker for $99.99 shipped. It lists for $199.99, and the best price I've seen elsewhere is $136.

Its name notwithstanding, the InMotion Air does not incorporate Apple's AirPlay technology. Rather, it supports wireless audio streaming via Bluetooth, … Read more
