Synology DSM 4.2 NAS OS now live

After almost two months in a beta state, Synology's version 4.2 of its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is now live.

The new version offers a host of improvements for both home and business users, especially in terms of ease of use. For example, Quick Connect -- a feature that quickly configures the router to facilitate the NAS server's Internet-based applications -- now supports the setup of more apps, including Cloud Station, DS File, DS Audio, DS Photo+, and the new DS Cloud app.

DS Cloud adds a Dropbox-like sync service for mobile devices. Other improvements … Read more

Digital storage basics, Part 4: SSD explained

Editors' note: This post is Part 4 of an ongoing series that aims to explain digital storage, based on questions and inquiries from readers. For the other parts, check out the related stories.

Made to replace hard drives in many applications, SSDs have nothing in common with hard drives in terms of how they handle data. By popular demand, I am explaining in this post how they work in layman's terms. I'll also answer other SSD-related questions.

How SSDs work

To understand how an SSD works, let's start with two most important parts: the controller and the … Read more

Granted, Bitcasa and Pogoplug are, to a degree, apples and oranges. The former works more like Dropbox on steroids, syncing selected folders and even letting you migrate data off your hard drive and onto your cloud drive.

Pogoplug doesn't … Read more

Backblaze shares third-gen storage server design

Backblaze, a startup offering online backup service, has released the designs for its newest Storage Pod, a low-budget storage server with 180TB of capacity.

It was something of a PR stunt when the company shared its first-gen Storage Pod design back in 2009, but the 67-terabyte system proved useful to organizations including the Vanderbilt University Institute of Image Science, which stores medical imaging data, ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and and the Geographic Information Network of Alaska. Netflix was inspired to share its Open Connect Appliance Hardware design, and Backblaze also showed its Storage Pod 2.0 design, which could … Read more

Save to Dropbox from the Chrome right-click menu

Dropbox is one of the top cloud storage solutions for anyone who needs to share or collaborate on documents, audio or images. As long as you have Internet connectivity, you can access your files from anywhere, giving you peace of mind that a specific file won't be forgotten when you're away from the computer.

If you're often saving documents or images from the Web, you may notice that the process isn't very streamlined on its own. You either have to use the Dropbox software on your PC and choose that folder every time you want to … Read more
