Touch puzzler inspired by top apps

Contre Jour is an arcade puzzler that veteran gamers will see as a mashup of game mechanics and inspiration from several other popular titles. That said, Contre Jour is a well-executed melange, a fun and often challenging puzzle game with polished art and sound.

On each short level of Contre Jour, you're trying to get a charming little alien (essentially, a rolling eyeball) to the level's exit. The alien doesn't move on its own, so you need to use attached ropes (some elastic, some not, some with movable anchors), slingshots, malleable ground (which you can shape with … Read more

Quick Take: Canon PowerShot S100

The Canon PowerShot S95 is a very good, popular camera with some commonly complained about flaws: among those are the poor flash design, lack of a grip, narrow maximum aperture at the telephoto end of the zoom range, short battery life, slow performance and relatively expensive price. With the S100, Canon seemingly addresses a few of these--the addition of a small grip looks like the exception--plus it adds some desirable new features: a wider-angle 24mm start to the zoom range, manual controls and zooming during video, and a built-in GPS.

Here's the product landscape into which Canon's releasing the S100:… Read more

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS announced

On the outside, the new Canon PowerShot SX40 HS doesn't look any different than its predecessor, the SX30 IS. In this case, it's what's inside that counts.

While other camera manufacturers had started using backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensors in their higher-end 2010 compact cameras, Canon stuck with a 14-megapixel CCD for SX30. That changes with the SX40 HS getting the same 12-megapixel BSI CMOS that's in Canon's Elph HS models, which so far has proved good for improving shooting performance and low-light photo quality.

On top of the new sensor, this camera gets a new … Read more

Wide pano shots in one fluid motion

360 Panorama gives you a simple method for creating panoramic images, removing the need to take multiple shots. Instead of matching up shots, this app has you film a scene as you would shoot a movie and then stitches together your shots seamlessly in real time. Just hold up your iPhone and start from one side of the scene. Then, press the button in the bottom center of your screen and slowly pan to the right in one continuous motion. At the end, hit the button again and your panorama is finished. The resulting image lets you swipe to look … Read more

HP announces 15 new printers for consumers and small businesses

HP held its annual Imaging and Printing Conference in Shanghai today, where the company announced plans to build out its business imaging division with 13 new printers designed to grease the workflow for small to midsize businesses. Along with hardware announcements, HP also unveiled new consumer features like ePrint Wireless Direct that lets users print with a smartphone without the need for an Internet connection; an advanced HP Printer Control app (PDF) for iOS devices; and a twist on HP ePrint called SocialID, which lets you assign a custom e-mail address that makes it easier for multiple users to print in the cloud.

One of the new product offerings you'll see soon is the HP LaserJet M275 (PDF), a multifunction printer with new TopShot Scanning that's essentially the reverse of 3D printing: the scanner bed can capture a 3D image of any object placed on the top-mounted tray.

This workhorse laser targets SMBs, so it can only hold up to 150 sheets of paper, but it also features ePrint and is fully compatible with Apple AirPrint so you can output images and documents directly from your iOS devices.… Read more

Canon's ultimate soccer mom (or dad) camera?

Until recently, most point-and-shoots were too slow to capture active kids. I mean, you could get something, but probably not the shot you wanted. The switch to fast CMOS sensors, such as the one in the new PowerShot Elph 510 HS, has helped speed up capture. Add in the 510's wide, long lens with improved image stabilization, full HD, and slow-motion movie capture, and a large touch screen all in a body that's somehow less than an inch thick and you have what sounds like an ideal snapshot camera for families.

The 510 HS updates the SD4500 IS, … Read more

Canon announces PowerShot SX150 IS compact megazoom

Canon does little with the PowerShot SX150 IS to entice SX130 IS owners to trade them in for the refresh. The SX130 IS is a regular recommendation for me due to its AA batteries for power, full manual to full auto shooting modes, and large comfortable design that still squeezes in a pocket. None of that changes with the SX150.

In fact, it seems to have all the same shooting modes (except for the addition of a Discreet mode that shuts off all noises and lights), the same 28mm wide-angle lens with 12x zoom, and the same 3-inch LCD. What'… Read more

A spiffy shot glass for shooters

Sure we've seen our share of lens mugs, but Photojojo's Shot Glass Lens Set is a first. Made from ceramic, the $18 set consists of three individual shot glasses made to look like exact replicas of Canon's EF 24-105mm L lens, albeit in miniature.

The designers even included detail such as ridges on the focus ring and an on/off autofocus switch to make them look more realistic. If you're not a fan of alcohol, they can be used as to hold toothpicks, paperclips, and other small items.

It's your turn to score

Freekick 2 is a free, ad-supported soccer game that lets you take repeated direct free kicks on a goal.

Freekick 2 looks great, with a photorealistic field and cartoonish players, and it has a fun, easy-to-learn interface that lets you adjust the speed and direction of your shot, including the ability to put a little bend on the ball. You tap arrows to rotate your point of view left and right, and you swipe your finger up an arrow to determine the force and spin of your kick. As you score, the number of defenders rotates between one, two, and … Read more
