New Samsung Android phone clears FCC

Blame it on the holidays, but it wasn't a busy week over at the Federal Communications Commission. Besides a couple of Sharp handsets headed for Japan, we found a new Samsung Android handset, the SHW-M190S.

Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. And to save you the trouble, Crave has combed through the database for you. Here are a selection of filings from the past week on new and upcoming cell … Read more

Friday Poll: Anxious about cell phone radiation?

This week, CNET updated its running list of the 20 cell phones with the highest specific absorption rate (SAR) levels. Debate over phone radiation danger has been going on for years, but it may be on more people's minds with all the talk about potential hazards of TSA body scanners.

The fact is that cell phones do emit radiation; it's part of how they work. We're not saying cell phones are dangerous, and we're not saying they're not. We're just stating the facts as we've measured them. To be fair, we also recently … Read more

HTC Shift Evo 4G clears FCC

It wasn't a huge week at the Federal Communications Commission, but there were two handsets worth mentioning. As Phonescoop reported, the Casio C771 should be an Android phone for Verizon Wireless, and we saw what should be the HTC Evo Shift 4G. Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. Sharp Galapagos tablet, AT&T Galaxy Tab clear FCC

Forgive us for missing this blog the last few weeks, but we're back to report on the mobile happenings at the Federal Communications Commission. Outside of the appearance of the Samsung GT-i9020, aka what could be the Nexus S, it was a tablet week at the FCC's certification labs. We spied the upcoming Sharp Galapagos and the AT&T and international version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab . Meanwhile, a couple of Kyocera handsets, Tracfone's simple Samsung SGH-T340G, and the Android-powered ZTE 003Z Libero, which is destined only for the Japanese market, represented the phone camp.

FCC changes phone radiation guidance

The Federal Communications Commission has removed guidance from its Web site that advised consumers shopping for a cell phone to consider the amount of radiation a handset emits. The revisions, which first appeared last week, were not formally announced nor do they appear to be the result of an official change in policy.

On its revised consumer fact sheet the agency says that considering a handset's specific absorption rate (SAR)--which denotes the amount of radio frequency energy (RF) a phone emits--may be misleading because, among other things, the actual SAR for a phone will vary depending on the … Read more

Cell phone radiation detection app comes to Android

Tawkon, a small Israeli start-up, announced Monday that its cell phone radiation detection application has arrived for Google Android phones.

The company's mobile application uses an algorithm that measures your specific absorption rate or SAR (See also: CNET's Quick Guide: Cell phone radiation levels). This is the rate at which your whole body absorbs energy from a radio frequency magnetic field. Specifically, the company measures the amount of radiation that is emitted from the phone; it uses the phone's GPS technology and accelerometers to gauge the position and proximity of the device to the body to determine … Read more

A trio of Huawei phones clear FCC

Even on a holiday week, things can get busy at the Federal Communications Commission. In the past few days, three Huawei models passed through the FCC's gates--evidence perhaps that the company is trying to crack the U.S. market--along with models from Nokia and Motorola, and something called the ZTE MoviStar Urban.

Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. And to save you the trouble, Crave has combed through the database … Read more

LG Windows Phone 7 handsets, Xperia X8 clear FCC

We apologize for not posting FCC filing on this blog for the last few weeks, but the end of August was a good time to come back. Last week, a lot of cell phones passed through the Federal Communications Commission's certification process including two Windows Phone 7 devices from LG. Phonescoop sighted the LG GW910 on August 23, and CNET's Ina Fried weighed in with her analysis later that day. The GW910 should have a keyboard while the LG C900 will have just a touch screen. Also in smartphones, the FCC saw an HTC handset equipped for T-Mobile'… Read more

Motorola Flipout clears FCC

It was a bit of a mishmash in the Federal Communications Commission's certification labs this week. Among other models, we saw the RIM BlackBerry Torch, the curious Motorola Flipout swivel handset, and what appears to be a Windows Phone 7 device from HTC.
