T-Mobile rolls out Android 1.6 Donut to G1 and MyTouch 3G

Just a couple of weeks after Google released its Android 1.6 SDK to developers, T-Mobile began its official roll out of Android 1.6 (aka Donut) to T-Mobile G1 and T-Mobile MyTouch 3G owners on Thursday.

The update will be delivered to customers over the coming days, and though it's not considered to be a major upgrade to the operating system, Android 1.6 does bring a number of new features and enhancements and fixes a bug that would reboot the phone after dialing 911.

Highlights of Donut include:

An improved Android Market Quick Search Box, which lets … Read more

Sprint vs. T-Mobile: Which is the best Android carrier?

With its new HTC Hero, Sprint is about to join the Google Android community. But how do its new offerings stack up against the handsets and services of T-Mobile? If you're looking to purchase an Android phone, which carrier is better?

Phones Sprint: The HTC Hero will be the first Android phone from Sprint, but rumors suggest that Sprint will also launch a Samsung Android phone later this year. And since Sprint also carries LG phones in its lineup, it could also be a destination for LG's new Android phone.

Android apps show big potential for growth

This was originally posted at ZDNet's Between the Lines.

Android, iPhone and iPod Touch users are all highly engaged with applications and frequently download them to their devices, according to a new survey from AdMob.

However, Android has a much smaller base of devices and thus has more upside ahead.

AdMob, a company that tracks mobile Web and application usage, found that Android and iPhone users download nine to 10 apps a month and iPod Touch users download 18 a month. More than half of the Android and iPhone users spend more than 30 minutes a day using apps, … Read more

Using an unlock pattern on the MyTouch 3G

As with any good touch-screen phone, the display on the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G will lock after a few minutes of inactivity. It's definitely a needed feature, unless you enjoy it when your phone places random calls while jostling around in your pocket.

As a security precaution, many handsets like the iPhone allow you to use a numeric code to unlock the screen for use. The MyTouch, however, takes a different tack. It lets you unlock your handset by tracing a pattern between a grid of nine dots on the display.

The pattern is customizable and you can change it … Read more

Prizefight: Palm Pre vs. MyTouch 3G

I know that you're finding it unbelievable that CNET has a Prizefight with touch-screen cell phones that doesn't feature the iPhone. Rest assured, though, we've done just that. After reviewing the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G last month, I began to wonder how it would stack up against the competition. The iPhone was a natural choice, but Apple device and the T-Mobile G1 had already done battle so I didn't want too much of a repeat. That led me to the Palm Pre as the ideal candidate. Bonnie Cha and Brian Tong joined me as judges, and we … Read more

MyTouch at The Shack; T-Mobile offers more 3G

Google Android fans can now buy the new T-Mobile MyTouch 3G at 4,000 Radio Shack stores nationwide. The price will remain the same ($199), but you'll be able to purchase the phone, sign a contract, pay your upgrade fee, and pick up that plug adapter that you've been meaning to get. Radio Shack, that now annoyingly calls itself "The Shack," has long carried smartphones from most major carriers, but this is the first time it will offer an Android handset.

T-Mobile also announced--actually, it twittered--that its 3G network is now live in Knoxville, Tenn., … Read more

T-Mobile: Churn's up from a year ago

This was originally published at ZDNet's Between the Lines.

T-Mobile said Thursday that it added 325,000 net customers in its second quarter, but a contract churn rate of 2.2 percent, up from 1.9 percent a year ago is a trouble spot. T-Mobile said that its new Android-powered MyTouch 3G and a distribution pact with Radio Shack gives it "opportunities for new growth."

T-Mobile, the U.S. mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom, ended the quarter with 33.5 million customers, good for fourth place among carriers. However, T-Mobile is adding customers as third-place Sprint is losing them. … Read more

Elvis impersonators, patriot jets salute MyTouch arrival

SAN FRANCISCO--Wearing an all-white Elvis suit, a parachuter blazed down into Justin Herman Plaza here as giant balloons of confetti exploded, U2's "Beautiful Day" blasted, and a broadcaster announced, "Ladies and Gentleman, T-Mobile is proud to present the MyTouch with Google."

What do Elvis, skydivers, and confetti have to do with a cell phone? We're not sure either. But T-Mobile used all of those, along with all sorts of other random hoopla to celebrate the release of the MyTouch 3G on Wednesday.

MyTouch, T-Mobile's second Google Android phone, has a touch screen that … Read more
