Michael Dell says he is OK with the 'post-PC' era

Everything is copacetic in the post-PC era, according to Michael Dell.

Speaking at VMware 2012, Dell's founder and CEO cited the fact that 380 million PCs were sold last year, adding that "the post-PC era has been pretty good for PCs so far," according to a report at Citeworld.

And as is typical at many PC-centric events, the iPad -- despite its growing popularity as a client device -- and smartphones didn't garner much attention, Citeworld said.

That is, until poll results showed the rise of "post-PC" devices as the No. 1 trend in … Read more

Dell profit and revenues shrink, and so does its outlook

Dell again posted disappointing earnings, and its shares declined 3.5 percent in after-hours trading.

The company's sales and net income both shrank in the May-July quarter compared to a year earlier. Revenue fell eight percent to $14.5 billion, while net income dropped 18 percent to $732 million. Dell blamed the decline on a contraction in desktop and mobility revenue.

The company's adjusted profit did exceed analyst expectations, though revenue fell short. Dell reported per-share earnings of 50 cents on the adjusted basis beloved by Wall Street. The consensus estimate compiled by First Call was for per-share … Read more

European telecom official takes dim view of Samsung patents

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Samsung did not comply with multiple guidelines set forth by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, according to the group's former top board member.

During testimony, Dr. Michael Walker -- who served as ETSI's chairman of the board between 2008 through 2011 -- said that Samsung had failed to disclose two of the patents it's using in its case against Apple to the standards group in a timely manner.

As a result of that, Walker says that Samsung should not be able to use them as ammunition in the case.

To prove that, Walker … Read more

The disappeared tweets of Michael Dell's daughter

It's not easy being a wealthy parent, especially if your kids want to do the same things as the kids of other wealthy parents do.

You know, like, um, constantly feeding your Twitter account.

Wayne Gretzky seems to have been one modern patrician who became frustrated with his daughter's Twitter postings, reportedly shutting down his daughter's Twitter feed twice. She does like a racy shot or two, does Paulina Gretzky.

Now I hear there might have been another marginal breach in Twitterdom in the bosom of Michael Dell.

As Bloomberg Businessweek reports it, Dell's 18-year-old daughter … Read more

Dell CEO: Really, we're not a PC company anymore

Dell, which still generates a slight majority of its revenue from PCs, isn't really in the PC business anymore.

So says founder and CEO Michael Dell, who spent a majority of his time at a conference hosted by Fortune today speaking about corporate servers, storage, networking, security, and IT services -- anything, basically, but the PC business.

"In the last five years, we really made a concerted shift to end-to-end IT services," Dell said.

He calls it the "new Dell," a shift away from the PC business as the technology industry embraces the notion of … Read more
