Hyundai chases young buyers with Veloster

Hyundai is counting on the Veloster sporty coupe to boost its street cred among Gen Y buyers.

The successor to the Tiburon coupe--which was last produced as a 2008 model--is the brainchild of Hyundai Motor America's product planning department. Roughly five years ago, U.S. officials began making the case to the Korean parent company for an affordable sporty car to draw young buyers to the brand. Gen Y consumers are those born between the early 1980s and the early 1990s.

The initiative led to the Veloster concept that debuted at the Seoul auto show in 2007--and the production … Read more

To focus on hydrogen, Hyundai passes Kia keys to EV market

Electric vehicles may seem like the inevitable evolution of the conventional gas-powered automobile, but not every carmaker agrees. Hyundai will sit out the pure-electric car round, and instead concentrate its efforts on designing the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

As part of a decision by the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, Hyundai--which owns 51 percent of Kia--will stop all efforts to develop and produce electric vehicles, according to Korean newspaper The Chosun Iblo. The auto manufacturer previously planned to produce the all-electric BlueOn, but it has shelved those plans and instead will focus on developing the Tucson ix Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. … Read more

A clearer look at the next Hyundai Genesis Coupe

This isn't the first leaked look at the upcoming update to the Hyundai Genesis Coupe that we've seen, but it's definitely the clearest.

The headlamps, fog lamps, and general grille shape echo the design direction of the upcoming Hyundai Veloster sport compact, but with less visual complexity. On the other hand, the hood vents, which are more clearly visible here than in any previous spy shot, in my opinion, don't do the new Coupe any favors. Also, we've yet to see a clear shot of what the rear end's changes (if any) will look … Read more

Hyundai fuel cell Hope tour funds cancer research

A Hyundai Tucson left San Francisco this morning, heading to Los Angeles in the first leg of a cross-country trip. But this trip is no family vacation; the Tucson will be picking up handprints from children as it makes stops at pediatric cancer facilities. And the car will not burn any gasoline in its travels, as its fuel cell stack converts hydrogen into electricity for its drive motor.

Hyundai's Hope on Wheels tour is designed to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, and present 71 hospitals with $100,000 grants to fund researchers. Childhood cancer patients and survivors will add … Read more

Hyundai brings shopping tools to Facebook (exclusive)

Red or white? Premium or base audio? Let your friends help you decide on your next car--Hyundai is bringing its suite of car-shopping tools from its Web site to Facebook.

CNET has learned that Hyundai will be adding four new car-buying tools to its Facebook fan page that will let car buyers crowdsource their friends' opinions on prospective vehicles. Auto manufacturers spend a good amount of time and effort trying to drive traffic to their Web sites, but rather than chase traffic, Hyundai is bringing its Web site content to a social network where many of its customers go every … Read more

Hyundai Genesis Coupe's new nose: Hot or not?

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is due for a visual refresh at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. But rather than wait a few weeks for a peek at the refresh, why not have a nice long look at this batch of "fresh pictures from Korea" unleashed onto the Internet by a source on a Genesis Coupe enthusiast site.

The blurry camera phone pictures reveal that the Coupe's face has been nipped and tucked to resemble that of the upcoming Veloster sporty hatchback. The massive hexagonal grille is certainly more aggressive than the current models, and the hood gains … Read more

2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe to start at $18,060

Hyundai announced pricing for the 2012 Veloster three-door coupe, starting at $18,060 for the six-speed manual and $19,310 for the six-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch Transmission, including a $760 destination charge.

CNET first saw the Veloster at the 2011 Detroit auto show back in January.

Under the hood of the Veloster is a 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine, the same found in the new Accent. Hyundai estimates the Veloster will get 28 mpg city and 40 mpg highway with the manual. The automatic is estimated at 29 mpg city and 38 highway, the automaker said in a press release.

The front-wheel-drive … Read more

2012 Hyundai Accent SE wins in all ways but one

There once was a time when the most noteworthy thing about Hyundai's entry-level hatchback was that its $9,970 price tag made it quite literally the cheapest car in America. However, the 2012 Hyundai Accent SE that showed up in the Car Tech garage last week was anything but cheap.

Weighing in at an as-tested MSRP of $16,590, the Accent has grown quite a bit in price, but it has also grown in nearly every other metric. The new hatchback is larger, more comfortable, and of much higher quality than its predecessor. It's also much more fun … Read more
