Google TV's YouTube app update to surface more videos

Google has delivered a small update for its Google TV YouTube app.

The company yesterday announced that the update, which is available in the Android Market, is designed to surface the videos people are most interested in. To accomplish that goal, the app includes new channel pages, featuring playlists and videos users can subscribe to. In addition, the application now includes a related videos list and the option to see all the clips uploaded by individual users.

The most important addition to Google TV's YouTube app is a feature called Discover. After booting up Discover, users can sift through … Read more

Google promises 'big announcements' for Google TV

updated Google is teasing us with a promise of "big announcements" tomorrow regarding Google TV.

"Get ready for Monday, we have some big announcements!" the Web giant cryptically teased late Saturday from its Facebook page.

Google representatives did not immediately respond to requests for more information, so it looks like we will have to wait until tomorrow to see what the company has up its sleeve. Perhaps the company will take the wraps off consumer gear the company is reportedly developing.

The company is working on a home entertainment device that would "stream music wirelessly … Read more

Google secretly testing pair of connected devices

Google has asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to use an undisclosed, mystery "entertainment device" across four major cities over the next six months.

Described as having both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the FCC application was initially submitted in December and recently discovered by GigaOm.

Although the details of the device are unclear, it stands to reason that it could have both Google TV and Android implications. Indeed, reading through the description it sounds as if it would take video content from the the Internet and distribute it across multiple connected devices. So rather than each … Read more

Sony Google TV update coming soon

A tweet from the official Google TV twitter account indicates that a noteworthy update's coming to Sony's Google TV devices.

When the update lands this week, owners of the NSZ-GT1 Google TV/Blu-ray player will be able to watch 3D Blu-ray movies through the device. The new firmware update also speeds up the Google Chrome browser implemented in the aforementioned Internet TV box and Sony's short-lived NSX-24GT1, NSX-32GT1, NSX-40GT1, and NSX-46GT1 televisions with Google TV built-in. We assume the next generation of Sony Google TV devices (NSZ-GS7 and NSZ-GP9) will ship with this new functionality. … Read more

Vizio gets in the Google TV game, will support OnLive

LAS VEGAS--Google TV looked like it might be on the ropes after the disappointing Honeycomb update to Android, but it's making its presence felt at CES 2012.

Vizio announced two Google TV products here at the Consumer Electronics Show: the VAP430 set-top box and the VBR430 Blu-ray. The VAP430 is one of the smallest Google TV devices available so far, looking more like a jumbo Roku box than the larger design of the Logitech Revue.

The remote included with the VAP430 will be slightly different from some of the Google TV remotes available with other products, in that apparently it will also fire IR commands to control other devices, rather than IR using blasters. There are also dedicated buttons on the remote for Amazon Instant, Netflix, and Vudu, which should be helpful for getting around Google TV's somewhat clunky interface.… Read more

OnLive gaming app comes to Google TV devices

LAS VEGAS--Finally, a unique and worthwhile "app" comes to Google TV.

Google announced today that its much-maligned connected TV platform would support the OnLive gaming service.

OnLive's "cloud" gaming allows users to play a variety of console-quality titles on devices like PCs, tablets, and now select Google TV hardware like TVs, streaming boxes, and Blu-ray players, without having to use an actual game console.… Read more

Sony QWERTY remote takes control (hands-on video)

LAS VEGAS--2012 looks like it may turn out to be the year smart TVs lived up to their promise. The lurking threat of Apple on the horizon has made TV makers raise their game, and in this video from CES we take a look at Sony's quirky new remote for its Google TV devices.

Hit play and you'll see the remote has a taser-ish design, with the usual array of buttons on the front and a laptop-like trackpad for controlling an onscreen cursor. Turn the gadget over and you'll find a backlit QWERTY keyboard for typing in URLs, usernames, and passwords.

Vizio's Google TV delayed until early fall, now edge-lit

LAS VEGAS--Google TV has a way of disappointing expectations, and one strong case in point is the Vizio's VIA Plus platform for TVs.

At CES 2011 we named the VIA Plus models as our favorite TV product of CES. They used Google TV to deliver what the company described as interoperability between the TV and Android-equipped phones and tablets. Among other features, Via Plus was also said to support the OnLive gaming service. Those extras, along with the same kind of full-array local-dimming backlight we know and love, was enough to convince us that the so-equipped TVs were going … Read more
