GetJar aiming to rival Android Market

App store GetJar plans to "aggressively expand" its software for Android devices with at least part of a new $25 million funding round.

GetJar, which started its app shop in 2005, touts itself as the world's largest open app store and the second largest app store behind Apple's. GetJar boasts more than 1.5 billion downloads to date for multiple mobile platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian.

Seattle police use twitter to recover stolen cars

It only takes a village to raise a child, but it apparently it take the Twitterverse to find a stolen car. This month, the Seattle police department became one of the newest Twitter users and will use @GetYourCarBack as a way to find stolen vehicles.

Consider it a poor man's lo-jack or an Amber alert for newly jacked cars. When the Seattle police get a report of a stolen vehicle, they will report on Twitter the year, make, model and color of the missing car with instructions to the public to call 911 if they spot the vehicle. The … Read more

AT&T prepares for the end to iPhone exclusivity

The end of 2010 is close and it looks like AT&T is beefing up its device portfolio and app offerings for a day when it isn't the only U.S. operator offering the Apple iPhone.

AT&T ladles out GetJar apps--iPhone excluded

GetJar's mobile app store is now available in AT&T's AppCenter.

Upon downloading the application, AT&T customers can access the company's more than 75,000 applications. GetJar's store has several top titles, led by internationally beloved game, Angry Birds. GetJar also added the Shazam music app to its service yesterday. Apps downloaded from GetJar can be delivered to devices running Symbian, Android, and RIM's BlackBerry OS, among others.

Angry Birds tops 2 million Android downloads

Angry Birds has hit 2 million downloads on Android-based devices in just two days of availability, the game's developer announced on its Twitter account today.

On Friday, Rovio released Angry Birds for Android users on cross-platform app store, GetJar. The game is also available in the Android Market. GetGlue strikes book publisher deals

There's a new partnership for GetGlue, a start-up that lets users "check in" to the movies or TV shows they're watching, music they're listening to, and books they're reading. The company announced Tuesday that it's partnered with four major book publishing houses to launch "stickers," the equivalent of Foursquare's achievement badges, for the season's biggest-ticket fiction and nonfiction books as well as bestselling authors like Tom Clancy and Paulo Coehlo.
