SmartFuel app saves drivers gas money, muggings

Smartfuel, a new free iOS app from Iridium Development, promises to find the cheapest gas along your route--and it looks to do so without getting you beaten up or robbed.

SmartFuel uses an in-app mapping system developed by Navteq that allows drivers to search the best prices at stations up to 100 miles ahead without changing the driver's chosen route. The software recalculates possible gas stations and their prices as the route changes.

This isn't the first app to find the cheapest gas in the vicinity, but SmartFuel takes the unique step of considering the cleanliness of the filling station and the safety of the surrounding neighborhood. Users can rate and review any station they visit and leave notes on the quality of life around the 87 octane.

It's an interesting additional tool in the gas price chase because it involves the potentially controversial step of evaluating neighborhoods. Big-city folks know supply and demand keeps the gas prices a bit cheaper in neighborhoods where incomes are statistically lower and crime rates are higher.

So, SmartFuel users are left to ask how badly they want cheap gas. Are you willing to brave riskier areas to save a few pennies a gallon?

SmartFuel provides up-to-the-minute prices from the Oil Price Information Service (and I didn't know there was such a service, either). OPIS gives SmartFuel access to gas prices at more than 125,000 stations across the country and relays up to 1.5 million price updates each day.… Read more

Future bright for cleaner-burning natural gas

For natural gas, the stars are aligned for it to play a far more substantial role in the world energy mix, according to a pair of reports this week.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology today published its report on natural gas, which it characterized as an abundant and reasonably priced resource able to act as a bridge to a low-carbon future. The International Energy Agency released its own study (PDF) Monday, where it said natural gas is poised to enter a "golden age."

The key driver for the optimism around natural gas is supply as well as societal … Read more

Power plant to steady wind and solar with gas

A power plant planned for Turkey will use a combination of energy sources--wind, solar, and natural gas--to deliver round-the-clock electricity service.

General Electric today said that it will supply the equipment for a 508-megawatt plant to developer MetCap Energy, which expects to complete the project by 2015. The plant in Karaman, Turkey, is projected to power more than 600,000 homes.

The project is unusual in that a single facility will draw on three sources to deliver "baseload" power, or the power needed to meet the continuous energy demand for the area. GE said that the plant's … Read more

GE invests in eSolar for combined solar, gas plants

When it comes to power plants, General Electric sees natural gas as solar and wind energy's best friend.

GE today said that it has licensed solar thermal technology from California-based eSolar for use in power plants that use both solar and natural gas. As part of the deal, GE has invested an undisclosed amount in eSolar.

Under the agreement, GE will offer a power plant that incorporates eSolar technology with GE's natural-gas turbines designed specifically for operating with large-scale solar and wind installations. The FlexEfficiency combined cycle natural-gas plant is designed to ramp power generation up and down … Read more

President Barack Obama's goal of having 1 million plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015 is on its way to being met, a Department of Energy official said today.
