Foursquare revamps site to highlight search engine

Foursquare is rolling out a new website today that could lure new users to the location-based recommendations service and let it step into Yelp territory.

Update, 12:12 p.m. PT: Foursquare's new site is now live. Check it out here.

First reported by Search Engine Land, the redone site could help Foursquare reach a broader audience, which would increase its data -- the key to its socially driven recommendations.

The new site will feature a prominent search box, instead of the tiny search bar that is currently at the top of the page, and unregistered users will get … Read more

How to flag duplicate Foursquare venues on iPhone, Android

When checking into a venue on Foursquare, it can be frustrating to see there's more than one venue listed. With some venues leading to unlocking badges, earning a mayorship, or even a special, duplicates get in the way. Marking duplicated venues is nothing new to the iOS app. In the past you'd have to visit the venues page and then flag it as a duplicate, or you could use Hopscotch if you're a Foursquare "superuser" to mark venues as duplicates.

About Foursquare pointed out a new feature in the latest update to the iPhone app … Read more

Pay $7 to promote your Facebook status?

Thursday's CNET Update never forgets a face:

Today's tech news roundup begins with a look at Facebook. The network is testing a feature that lets you pay to get your posts seen by more friends. Facebook first began testing this concept in May and it's already in 20 other countries. But it's rolling out to some U.S. users now, and the idea is to pay to show off big news or get more attention to an event. Facebook hasn't set an official price for this, but CNET staffers with the feature are asked to … Read more

NASA's Mars rover checks in on Foursquare (with 20 martians?)

I know that some people adore Foursquare.

They have a dominant need to become the mayor of their local laundromat and fishmonger.

However, others feel safer when others don't know where they are. Indeed, last night I saw several attendees of Oracle OpenWorld wandering around a part of San Francisco's North Beach and entering places from which I feel confident they would not have checked-in.

NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, has no fears however.

It is unconcerned about broadcasting its precise whereabouts. It has no worries that by doing so it might be vulnerable to a Mars attack.… Read more

Nook goes HD to face-off with Kindle

Wednesday's CNET Update puts a filter on it:

Barnes & Noble added two Nooks to the tablet family that have better screens and faster processors. Arriving in October, there's the 7-inch Nook HD (starting at $200 with 8 GB) and the 9-inch Nook HD+ (starting at $270 with 16 GB). They weigh in lighter than the competition and both have slots to add your own memory cards. But neither has a camera.

Gamers will be interested in the Wikipad, 10.1-inch tablet that has a controller dock with two analog sticks, a directional pad and four buttons. It … Read more

Foursquare lets users toggle friends to 'Always On'

It's never been easier to stalk, ahem follow, your friends on Foursquare. The social network announced a new feature today called "Always On."

This feature lets users get all check-in notifications from their specified friends at all times, no matter where they are. To use the feature, members simply need to go to their friends' profiles on the site and toggle the "Always On" button from the drop down menu.

According to Foursquare, this feature will help people know the necessary goings-on with friends without having to text or call them. It also lets armchair … Read more

Five Foursquare Connected Apps you should start using today

A while back Foursquare launched its Connected Apps platform, which expanded on how you can interact with a check-in after the fact. At first, the release was small with a few developers getting access to the API, but more developers have started making Connected Apps. There are some real gems available now.

Here is a list of five Connected Apps you should connect to your Foursquare account today.

#Mom We originally told you about Hash tag Mom earlier this year, well before Connected Apps were announced. Just this week, it was updated to make it a Connected App as well. … Read more

TomTom's iOS app updates with Foursquare search, check-ins

TomTom's navigation app for iPhone and iPad receives a small refresh with today's version 1.11 bump. The new update brings with it the most recent TomTom map data, new methods for choosing destinations and modifying routes, and Foursquare integration that further fleshes out the apps social networking feature set.

The Foursquare integration is probably the biggest bit of news here. If you're not familiar, Foursquare is a location-based social network game that gives users points for "checking in" to locations and awarding "mayorship" and perks to each location's most frequent visitors. … Read more

Foursquare update brings back the nearby friends view

When Foursquare rolled out its redesigned app back in June, there was one key feature missing: the ability to view what the friends who live in your city were up to. Instead, version 5.0 showed you one feed, combining all of the activity from all your friends, no matter where they were. Thankfully, users provided enough feedback about the missing feature that Foursquare decided to bring it back.

Today, Foursquare released an update to its iOS (version 5.2.2) and BlackBerry (version 5.0.5) apps, bringing back the nearby friends feed. To access the feed on the … Read more

Foursquare aims to turn a buck with 'Promoted Updates'

Foursquare has taken off the kid gloves and is ready to start making money. After rolling out "Local Updates" last week, letting any merchant allure potential nearby customers by sending out status updates, it launched "Promoted Updates" today.

Promoted Updates, which is still in pilot, takes the idea of Local Updates up a notch. Rather than being available to any merchant using the check-in service, Promoted Updates is only for those merchants willing to pay Foursquare on a "cost per action" model, according to TechCrunch. While in pilot, there are roughly 20 participating companies, … Read more
