LaCie 2big Thunderbolt series review: Just about right

LaCie has been known to give its tech products a touch of fashion, and the 2big Thunderbolt Series is no exception.

The device looks good and sturdy, resembling the rest of the 2big family, including the already reviewed 2big USB 3.0.

The biggest difference from the previous models is that it has two Thunderbolt ports on the back that take the place of any other connection types, so no USB, FireWire, or eSATA.… Read more

Philly challenge to map thousands of AEDs could go national

In an effort to quickly and efficiently map the roughly 5,000 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public areas of Philadelphia, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine recently launched a contest to award $10,000 to the team or person who finds the most.

With the six-week contest, which kicked off in late January, nearing its March 13 deadline, researchers are already planning to conduct a similar, nationwide challenge.

AEDs can save the lives of those suffering cardiac arrests via electric shocks, particularly if used in the first minutes following the onset of the attack. … Read more

Silicon Power Armor A80 review: Double A(lpha) male

Unlike most external drives I've seen, the Silicon Power Armor A80 portable hard drive uses A-male-to-A-male USB 3.0 cable.

This means the drive will not work with the more popular type of USB cable, which has an A male port on one end and a (Micro) B male port on the other. More than making up for this, the new drive offers alpha male performance all the way.… Read more

IoSafe silences Solo G3 drive, recommends Synology

LAS VEGAS--IoSafe has finally learned that silence is golden.

In addition to the new Rugged Portable Thunderbolt that was announced with a bang, the maker of disaster-proof storage devices also unveiled today at CES 2012 the brand-new Solo G3 external hard drive.… Read more

IoSafe unveils Thunderbolt drive with lightning and a hidden message

LAS VEGAS--If you don't know what a Thunderbolt drive is, and most importantly, how vulnerable your data can be, IoSafe wants to sear that in your mind.

Following its tradition of the last three CES shows, (and as I predicted prior to CES 2012), the maker of disaster-proof hard drives pulled off a spectacular show this year to unveil its Rugged Portable Thunderbolt drive. This time the demo came with a little twist.

The new drive itself is very similar to the previous USB 3.0 Rugged Portable that was introduced at last year's demo--and shot with shotguns. … Read more

WD teases with Thunderbolt drive demo

LAS VEGAS--It's a teaser to say the least.

Without any ado or even a hint, Western Digital showcased at CES 2012 its first Thunderbolt-based external hard drive, called the My Book Thunderbolt Duo. This is a drive that looks exactly like the My Book Studio II with one main difference: on the back it comes with two Thunderbolt ports and no other connection types.

There's not much information about the drive, but one thing is clear: this is a dual-bay drive, meaning that it hosts two internal hard drives. These hard drives are more than likely set up … Read more

Get a 1.5TB external hard drive for $99.99 shipped

Hard-drive prices, oy.

As you may have heard, flooding in Thailand last year damaged factories involved in hard-drive production, creating shortages and sending drive prices skyrocketing in the last couple months.

Indeed, back in October, today's deal wouldn't have been much of a deal at all. Today, it's downright stellar.

While supplies last, Buy.com has the Fantom GreenDrive 1.5TB external hard drive for $99.99 shipped.

Granted, 2TB drives were routinely selling for $70 to $80 not long ago, but beggars can't be choosers right now. This is one of the best storage deals … Read more

Thunderbolt strikes LaCie anew, this time 2big

LAS VEGAS--If LaCie's Little Big Disk Thunderbolt is, well, too little for you, get ready for this!

LaCie announced today at CES 2012 that its new LaCie 2big external hard drive now features a Thunderbolt connection. Originally, the 2big series only offered USB 2.0, FireWire, and eSATA for Macs. There's also a version that offers USB 3.0, which is geared toward Windows users.

The fact that the LaCie 2big features dual-volume, allowing for RAID 1 and RAID 0, means that Mac users now have another option, other than the Promise Pegasus, to have a fast external storage device that also offers data security. LaCie's other Thunderbolt drive, the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt, only comes with a single internal drive, hence it's susceptible to disk failure.… Read more

Storage products bargain hunters should look for

For virtually anything to happen as expected in our daily life, computer storage is needed. If you think that's a grand statement, you, like most of us, have been taking storage for granted.

Despite the massive recent flood in Thailand that affected many storage vendors, hard drives, the most common form of computer storage, are still generally affordable (and abundant in terms of capacities). However, not all other forms of storage applications share the similar pricing as hard drives. And they can get progressively pricier the faster and the cooler they get.

Here's a list of storage devices … Read more

Iomega releases eGo portable drive for Mac

If the LaCie Little Big Disk SSD is just too expensive for you (and it has to be), here's an alternative.

Iomega announced today a new portable hard drive for Mac, the eGo Mac Edition Portable Hard Drive, that offers up to 1TB of storage in a compact and a drop-resistant design. The new drive joins the company's existing lineup of Mac-oriented storage products, such as the Mac Companion Hard Drive that came out earlier this year.

Iomega says the new drive offers 256-bit hardware encryption and supports both USB 2.0 and FireWire. It doesn't offer USB 3.0, but this is normal, as Apple doesn't seem likely to support this standard anytime soon. The new drive is bus-powered and comes with three cables for USB 2.0, FireWire 800, and FireWire 400 connections.

The Iomega eGo Mac Edition Portable Hard Drive comes with a three-year warranty and is available now in 500GB and 1TB capacities, costing $179.99 and $229.99, respectively, making them much more affordable than LaCie's Thunderbolt drive.

Earlier this year, WD released the My Passport Studio for Mac portable drive, which offers a similar port configuration and is available in the 750GB capacity.… Read more
