Apple to show off iPad Mini at Oct. 23 event, report says

Apple's long-rumored iPad Mini will be outed in less than two weeks, a new report claims.

Apple plans to hold a special press event on October 23 to unveil its iPad Mini, All Things Digital is reporting today, citing sources.  Following the report, iMore, The Loop and The New York Times weighed in, saying the date is legit.

Rumors have been swirling for months that Apple is planning to launch a smaller iPad. More recently, reports had claimed that Apple had hoped to get it out last month but production issues have caused it to push the … Read more

Invites for iPad Mini event due next week, report claims

Is the iPhone 5 Apple's last big product announcement of the year? Rumors have suggested there may be one more thing, including a new report that says invites for its unveiling will go out next week.

Citing an unnamed "major Apple investor," Fortune today says Apple's invites for an iPad Mini-specific event will be sent out October 10, presumably for an unveiling event the following week. … Read more

Facebook enhances timeline events with 'registered to vote'

Facebook users can post to their timelines that they have a new tattoo, they're learning how to play a new instrument, and other "life events;" and, as of today, they can also announce that they're registered to vote.

The social network is rolling out this new "life event" as the 2012 presidential election season heats up.

"Election Day in the United States is right around the corner and people are increasingly using Facebook to discuss candidates, campaigns, and critical issues facing the country," Facebook wrote in a blog post. "Starting today, … Read more

The closest thing we've got to a Nintendo Wii U launch list

A lot was learned at the Nintendo Wii U preview event in New York this morning, but surprisingly enough, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime did not deliver a definitive launch list of Wii U titles available alongside the console on November 18.

Instead, much to the attending crowd's chagrin, Fils-Aime said "it's still a little too early to guarantee exactly which games will be here for you on launch day itself and which will come shortly thereafter." Mind you, the "launch window" Fils-Aime is referring to spans from November 18, 2012, all the way to March 31, 2013.… Read more

iPhone 5: No Steve Jobs, no sizzle

Apple's iPhone 5 launch with new iPods and an iTunes overhaul highlights the new era at the company that revolves around incremental updates, design prowess, and control of an entire user experience. But something is missing: the Steve Jobs reality distortion field.

Jobs' showmanship was brilliant. He could take an incremental update -- or a feature that has been seen somewhere else before -- and make you think it was brilliant, amazing, and beautiful. I knew it was a game, but it was one I played willingly. I'm going through Apple keynote withdrawal.

Now I'm beginning to … Read more

What the iPhone 5 event means for iPod

I think it's fair to say that the iPod is the most important product Apple ever made. It marked the tipping point between Apple's history as a computer manufacturer and its shift toward mobile consumer electronics. Without it, there would be no iTunes, no iPhone, no iPad -- none of the things people think of when they think of Apple today.

Which is not to say that the iPod is still an important part of Apple's bottom line. It could ax the iPod's whole division and still make more money from the iPhone and iPad than … Read more

It's official -- Apple's holding an event next Wednesday, where the company is widely expected to debut its next iPhone.

Amazon set to introduce new Kindles at September 6 event?

We'd been expecting new Kindles to be unveiled almost any day, and now that day has been set -- Amazon has sent out invites for a press conference in Santa Monica, Calif., on the morning of September 6.

While it's unclear just what Amazon will roll out, it's a good bet we'll see a new Kindle Fire (or maybe even multiple Fires) and an e-ink Kindle with a built-in lighting option.

New Kindles: What to expect Back in late June, a source told CNET that the next Kindle Fire would have a camera and physical volume-control … Read more
