This is the time of year to take stock in where high-performance computing (HPC) sits and where it is headed. That's because the SC09 conference is taking place in Portland, Ore., this week and it's the biggest HPC conference around.

SC is an odd duck as conferences go. Last year it had more than 10,000 attendees and, yet, it's a largely volunteer-organized event in a world where trade shows of this scope are packaged by conference specialists or some specific corporation. The holidays must be drawing near, because suddenly the Blu-ray deals are heating up.

Fix Ethernet driver problems in virtualized Windows 7

One advantage that Macs have is that you can legally run every operating system you want on them. I'm excited to have OS X, Ubuntu, Windows XP, and Windows 7 all on one machine. But after adding Windows 7 to VMware recently, I ran into a problem. It said that my Ethernet driver was no good and I couldn't get the Internet to work.

Energy Department eyes superfast Ethernet

Scientists will collaborate with as-yet-unnamed hardware and software vendors to develop a prototype 100Gbps Ethernet network, which will be used to connect U.S. Department of Energy supercomputer centers.

The aim is to develop a network capable of handling 1Tb (terabit) per second, according to Michael Strayer, head of the Department of Energy's office of advanced scientific computing research.

Is Broadcom banking on FCoE dominance?

Broadcom's persistent attempts to drag Emulex to the acquisition altar took another turn recently when Broadcom sweetened its offer from $9.25 per share to $11 per share of Emulex stock.
