Solar boat would tire out Energizer Bunny

We didn't know that there enough of these to create competition, but the "SolarShuttle" claims to be the "UK's largest and most advanced solar boat," according to Gizmag. Plying the waters of the "ecologically fragile" Serpentine Lake at Hyde Park in London, the boat reportedly runs silently and without pollution while ferrying up to 42 passengers. It even stores more than enough power to operate at night, sending surplus solar energy back to national utility plants. That's especially comforting because it means the boat won't get stranded while rented out … Read more

Your yacht needs an HD satellite

Now that you've ordered your Porsche yacht, what will you do in it when not racing? Raymarine has just the antidote to your boredom with its satellite HDTV system.

The seagoing dish is made specifically to work in boats, according to Gizmowatch, with antennae that continually change angles for optimal reception. The package, which includes an HD DirecTV receiver, is designed for uninterrupted signals even in extreme weather and oceanic conditions.

Depending on the model, it can cost as much as $9,000. But that's a drop in the Atlantic compared with the $300,000 you'll be … Read more

A boat for (very) quick getaways

Another speedboat shaped like a whale, only this one claims a speed of up to 140 mph (about 122 knots).

The Sea Phantom, noticed by Born Rich, is a "flying" speedboat from David Borman at Maritime Flight Dynamics, in Fort Meyers Beach, Fla. The company technically refers to the vehicle as if it were a plane. In fact, the company motto is "Helicopter speed. Powerboat price."

I'm not sure exactly what powerboats Maritime Flight is referring to, as the Sea Phantom ranges in price from $400,000 to $600,000 for the 30-foot version that … Read more

L'Hydroptère sailboat flying high

Sail-World just called attention to the fact that l' Hydroptère is on the brink of breaking the record for the world's fastest sailboat.

L'Hydroptère reached 47.2 knots on January 25, according to the log on its Web site. The absolute sailing speed record for 500 meters is 48.7 knots. L'Hydroptère also achieved an acceleration of 14 knots in 6 seconds.

The boat has been in development for several years on the principle that a sailboat's hull should not float on the water, but fly above it supported by &… Read more

Dreamboat for Orca?

Once again, technology finds inspiration in nature. This Orca-like craft is actually a catamaran.

Paritet Boat, the Moscow-based boat manufacturer, has released a successor to the glass-bottom Looker. The Looker is a hydrofoil boat--a boat with two wing-like struts mounted to the bottom of the hull. When you pick up enough speed, the hydrofoils raise the entire hull out of the water and you're essentially riding on the hydrofoils. This provides less drag and, therefore, less fuel needed for going fast.

Paritet's newest boat, the Ellips, has the same whale-shaped design, but is actually a catamaran. This means … Read more

Would Spider-Man ride this spider boat?

No, it's not a new boat being featured in Spider-Man 3.

The Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel (WAM-V) is a new boat made by Marine Advance Research that was unveiled at a press event in San Francisco on Thursday.

The WAM-V is essentially a modular catamaran that can be configured in different ways depending on your needs of use. Two engine "pods" separated from the main hulls can be switched out as well, depending on your engine needs. It can hold inboard or outboard motors, propellers or jets, diesel or gas.

Its hulls conform to the surface shape … Read more

A remote control for your yacht

Yachting can be such a trying leisure activity. All that champagne to chill and whatnot. The last thing you need to worry about is something so proletarian as steering. The "Minn Kota RipTide Wireless CoPilot" from Cabela doesn't drive the boat by itself, but it may be the next best thing. Uber-Review says the small remote, which can be worn on the wrist or a belt, has five simple buttons that can control speeds and turns. Perhaps most important of all, the remote--yes, it's waterproof--can also float in case the party gets the best of you.… Read more

Glide on the water guilt-free

OK, so it goes a maximum speed of just 6 knots. But if you're looking to relax and fish close to the coast, why not? With high fuel prices, the solar-powered Loon may be just the thing you need to replace the speed boat you were forced to sell.

Glide along quietly in this 20-foot pontoon-style boat with a solar-paneled roof from Ontario-based Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company. The 3-horse-power electric motor on the Loon is roughly equivalent to a 10hp gas motor. The boat has a total of 48 volts of battery power (eight 6-volt lead acid batteries) … Read more
